The ViewLondon Review

Review byNeda Hashemi03/12/2007
You might assume that a night at Crazy Larrys mean you’ll have a crazy time - unfortunately this places isn’t even mildly wild.

The Venue
The colourful, clown-bright sign outside Crazy Larrys suggests kooky, vibrant inside, but once you get upstairs, the blandness hits you. Simple wooden walls and floors, with an oddly placed red leather padded wall makes the decor seem haphazardly thrown together in an attempt to look different. However, it falls short – and this is glaringly apparent in such a small place. The comfy brown leather sofas create a slightly seductive, moody feel for drinkers who want to eye up the dancefloor before they venture on it, but cheap plastic tables take away any chance of the venue retaining some chic style.

The Atmosphere
Everywhere you look at Crazy Larrys, there are posh public school rugby boys with dressed up rah girls on their arm – all of whom have come straight off the Sloany Kings Road. But surprisingly, they don’t make the place feel too stuffy. They’re all there to drink, dance and have a good time, so there’s a sense of fun without the fuss, which gives the place a good buzz. The few people in blazers and prom dresses may seem shocking and far too overdressed, but they’re there to have (what they think) is a mad experience so they aren’t too intimidating.

The Music
Flashbacks to school disco classics and RnB legendary songs are the main thing on the play list. There’s no particular theme, just songs that people can sing along to, attempt to bop around and reminisce about the time that Arabella did something riotously funny - chortle chortle. This isn’t the place to try and show off your coolest moves, as you’re surrounded by people who enjoy the beats of varying acts like Wheatus and Jamelia, so just let go, throw your hands up in the air and don’t care what you look like. After a while the dated songs lose their nostalgic touch and the music seems a little bit ridiculous.

The Drink
The drink list at Crazy Larrys is extremely sparse with only four cocktails to chose from, three types of wine and a few beers. The choice of spirits consists of the usual, like the teenage simple favourites of vodka and coke. Prices aren’t too bad at around £4 for a spirit and mixer, and 2 pints of cocktails for £15, but the tempting cheap wine prices are cheap for a reason so try to avoid them unless you like drinking vinegar.

The Last Word
Crazy Larrys is a good place for a relaxed atmosphere, but the £10 entry is a bit steep for a relatively dull club.
