The ViewLondon Review
The Crown and Sceptre is a popular pub in Fitzrovia, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of perpetually busy Oxford Street.
The Venue
Tucked away on Foley Street, minutes from Oxford Street, sits The Crown and Sceptre public house. Shabby retro chic, diamond chandeliers, upright lamps and odd bits of furniture; you could be forgiven for thinking you’d just stepped into your nan’s living room. However, this all adds to the charm of the pub - no two items of furniture are the same, which makes a refreshing change from some of the more modern establishments around. The horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle is adorned by various snack options and a selection of wine and spirits to get the mouth watering.
The Atmosphere
The Crown and Sceptre is hugely popular with some of the media crowd who work in the surrounding area. On a busy night, the pub will have the usual hubbub of chit chat going on inside, and it’s often a 5-10 minute wait at the bar. On warmer evenings, the clientele spill out onto the pavement outside, increasing the pub’s size twofold. If you’re lucky, you might be able to blag one of the few tables and chairs that are situated outside.
Unfortunately, the bar staff can sometimes seem slow and indifferent to good customer service -expect to wait a while at busy times.
The Food
With a modern and extensive menu, the Crown and Sceptre is a popular choice for lunch. Favourites like chicken pie and vegetables, chilli con carne and 100% British beef burgers are always popular, with a main costing in the region of £6-£9. They also offer a selection of snack dishes such as chunky fish finger sandwiches, perfectly complemented by their chunky chips and mayo. Snacks range from £4-£7 dependent upon size.
The Drink
The Crown and Sceptre offers a wide selection of real ales like London Pride and a decent choice of international lagers, with several popular names on tap such as Budvar, Staropramen and Leffe, making it a popular choice with many young beer lovers in the area. An extensive wine list is also on offer with several options of white, red and rose to choose from. A small glass of wine will set you back around £3.20, rising up to £3.95 for the more expensive bottles. The Rose Pinot Grigio is an exceptionally popular choice and costs £15 a bottle.
The Last Word
Hugely popular with the media crowd, the Crown and Sceptre is a decent choice for its beer selection and no frills pub grub.
