An expert blend of traditional décor with modern ambiance makes The Crown pub a perfect bolthole away from the more commercial offerings on nearby Upper Street.

The Venue
Tucked away in a residential backstreet about 8-minutes-walk from Angel Tube, this Victorian pub is a real find and well worth the walk. In times where Starbucks and modern bars are sprouting up in the area this gastro pub provides a really attractive alternative. The pub offers real charm and character with ornamental clocks, large mirrors, a real fireplace and dark wooden panelling.

The bar itself is set out as an island in the centre of the pub which allows for plenty of space to get served, although you will have to negotiate your way through the locals propping up the bar first. There is some outdoor space with a couple of tables but it’s important to get there early to avoid disappointment in the summer months.

The Atmosphere
The Crown pub is unsurprisingly a hit with the local residents - both young and old. There is a great vibe to the place making it suitable for all types of people. Whether it’s couples having dinner in the corner, groups drinking around large tables or individuals working on laptops (free Wi-Fi available) there is a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The bar staff are also very friendly and attentive which is refreshing.

The Food
The food is really tasty and great value for the size of the portions served. The menu consists of hearty traditional English favourites with an adventurous twist satisfying all palates. There is the classic beef burger, sausage and mash, and fish and chips interspersed with more adventurous dishes like octopus and cuttlefish or poached duck egg and crispy panko breadcrumbs. Starters range from £5-£6.50, whereas the mains range from £9.50-£12.50. Make sure you leave some room for dessert as for £5 you can round off your meal with a chocolate and raspberry brownie, peach tart tatin or a selection of British cheeses which have been marked for their excellence by the British Cheese Awards.

The Drink
A good selection of international wines starts with their South African house wines (chenin blanc and merlot), which are reasonably priced at £15 a bottle. A large range of international beers including Belgian blondes, German and Singaporean lagers and North American dark ales are all priced around £4 a bottle/pint. Cider will set you back a bit more with their Thatcher’s Pear and Crabbie’s Ginger Beer at £4.60 and £4.70 respectively. Traditional Fuller’s draught ales are on tap at £3.70 a pint and their seasonal guest ales cost £3.45 a pint.

The Last Word
If you are a traditionalist who likes a good old English style pub then this is the perfect place to seek out and wile away the hours.
