The ViewLondon Review

One for seafood lovers, Curve is stylish, modern city dining at its best.

The Venue
Part of the Marriott West India Quay hotel, Curve sits on the waterfront of Canary Wharf where imposing skyscrapers make for dramatic views. Inside the design is modern and stylish with big, yellow leather seating that’s reminiscent of armchairs, hardwood floors and an open kitchen where you can watch the team of chefs working in choreographed brilliance.

The Atmosphere
More of a hotel guests kind of crowd than the suited and booted types which you may expect for the area, Curve’s atmosphere isn’t overly buzzy but it’s busy enough to make for ambient dining. The staff are very welcoming and will happily offer explanations and recommendations.

The Food
Curve sources its seafood from Old Billingsgate Market and the produce is phenomenally fresh and foodie friendly. Several dishes have been prepared with an Asian feel, while a small selection of meat dishes are also available for those who prefer to steer clear of seafood.

The crab cakes are the restaurant’s specialty and they’re absolutely divine. Served with a tangy mayonnaise, they come without the oiliness that’s too often found with fishcakes, and are heaped with moist crabmeat that’s flakey and fresh. The crab pate is also divine. Served chilled, it shares a similar meaty texture to the crab cakes and is served with a sweet fruit chutney, crunchy toast and a leafy green salad.

For mains (ranging between £15 to £23), the wild red snapper dish benefits from a plate of sides to beef it up, as it’s slightly small, but is grilled to just-right crispiness on the outside while the inside is firm and moist. It is accompanied in a creamy, rich sauce that complements the fish nicely while the richness of the sauce is softened with a smattering of leeks. The Meen Molee is a spicy coconut milk broth that comes overflowing with plump scallops, juicy king prawns and faultless clams, and makes for very moreish eating.

If you can’t commit to just one dessert, the taster platter is a superb choice to share. It includes a superb Champagne sorbet that’s fluffy and delicious and is finished off with ice-cold raspberries. Other tasters include a rich chocolate mousse with crumbled honeycomb pieces scattered on top, creme brulee that comes with a crispy top layer that you can’t wait to attack with your spoon, cheesecake and chocolate cake.

The Drink
The wine menu is hefty enough with a selection of by the glass, bottles and even half bottles to choose from. The New Zealand sauvignon blanc has a clean and crisp flavour that is an ideal accompaniment to the restaurant’s seafood menu and is priced at around £15 for a half bottle. Other drinks include bottled and draught beers and cocktails. After dinner aperitifs include cognacs, ports and a dessert wine.

The Last Word
A seafood aficionado’s dream, Curve has taken advantage of its location to source top quality produce to serve up brilliant, fresh nosh to its customers. You’ll leave feeling more than satisfied.
