The ViewLondon Review

Typical of most Davy’s bars, Davys at Creed Lane offers a rather contrived ‘traditional’ setting with genuinely good wine and beer.

The Venue
There is a certain charm to this basement bar, it’s just a little lacking in authenticity. Then again, authenticity isn’t high on the list of many City workers after a post-work tipple. It’s well presented with a solid stone floor, a low ceiling with lots of nooks and crannies to peer at and a mix of white stone and wooden walls. The main point of interest is the huge corner bar that sprawls its way across the centre of the space. It’s surrounded by little tables and chairs, and Victoriana lamps add a certain something aesthetically speaking.

The Atmosphere
There’s something about drinking in a cosy basement like this that makes the outside world melt away, which may be why the City boys and girls like it so much. It can get busy, but the banter is friendly and the staff are very competent so the wait at the bar is never too lengthy. Closed at the weekend, this is one pub that’s totally geared up to the post-work trade and Fridays are their big night. Get in early to guarantee a seat.

The Drink
Davys at Creed Lane is all about the wine – and they have a very impressive menu of old and new world bottles, covering a variety of regions and grapes, all priced at £15.95-£68 (not including the sparkling varieties that come in at a higher price point). They even sell their own wine, Davys Number 1. The white Number 1 has a pleasant citrus flavour with mineral notes and a dry finish that’s well beyond its £16.90 price tag. If you prefer the grain to the grape then their beers include Budvar, Asahi, Corona, Whitstable Bay, Weston’s Organic Cider and, more impressively, their own brand beer Davy’s Old Wallop, which is served in a pewter tankard.

The Last Word
Davy’s at Creed Lane is a good example of what the chain does right. A little contrived in its design, it still has more heart than many bars in the area.
