The ViewLondon Review

StarStarStarStarStar
Review bySimon Lazarus29/11/2007
Part of the sleek and stylish Mandeville Hotel, deVigne Bar serves up a superb array of cocktails and inventive drinks in surroundings that will make you feel like a real star.

The Venue
Located in the heart of Marleybone on Mandeville Place, this hotel stands out from the rest of the pack for all the right reasons. With the restaurant designed by globally renowned interior designer Stephen Ryan, the deVigne bar is a melange of the contemporary, the flamboyant, and the downright weird. A pastel of colours including reds, oranges, yellows and greens is complimented by gloriously sumptuous embossed wallpaper and well placed neon lights that are not overly garish and light up the area perfectly. In fact, the decor is as vibrant as the capital itself.

The Atmosphere
With such an over the top decor you would imagine media darlings and other pretentious wannabes would come pouring into deVigne Bar; however, you’d be pleasantly mistaken. Hotel residents, tourists and workmen and women who have been grafting all day come here to unwind over a refreshing cocktail. Warm and inviting, this is a certain hotspot to chill out in as the barman works his magic.

The Food
There is a good array of bar snacks that include a plate of char grilled chorizo and cheese, filo tiger prawns with a sweet chilli and coriander dip, and Cajun chicken fillets with a zesty lime chilli sour cream. One highlight is the Japanese strips of salmon coated in breadcrumbs and finished with an inventive wasabi creme fraiche. For the more exotic, try the beluga caviar with blinis and sour cream, as well as a varied choice of quality sushi.

The Drink
An imaginative decor is reflected in the drinks list created by their in-house mixologist. There’s an extensive whisky list, which has been under the close supervision of spirit writer, Ian Wisniewski. The deVigne Bar menu brings a little teaser in a tray comprising of five cocktails served in a double shot glass. Some of the concotions include a house cocktails made with chilled champagne and vodka infused with rose. One highlight is the Black Margarita, which is for the strong willed. The colour is stunning with its palette of dark colours with a melange of lime and blackberry fruit. Another favouraite is Tennessee Passion, a mix of passion fruit and tangy pineapple. Those who are more daring can opt for the Wasabi Martini, which is a unique vodka cocktail that consists of fresh wasabi paste.

The signature cocktail that will have your tongue on tenterhooks is the Mandeville. With an infuson of Magellan’s gin, which is a French gin, it has a distinct peppery aroma. Another popular drink is the Honey Suckle - a mixture of honey vodka, rose petal liquor, elderflower and crushed raspberries, topped off with champagne. And now there is even a choice of refreshing organic cocktails, including a martini and mojito list.

The Last Word
Opulent, out of this world extravagance with an exciting drinks list, deVigne Bar is at the cutting edge of mixology and is not to be missed
