A no nonsense pub without frills, The Dog and Bull is a little piece of Croydon’s history books.

The Venue
The Dog and Bull pub, situated in Croydon’s famous Surrey Street market, is arguably one of the oldest pubs in town. The decor is pretty basic, with a bar in the centre of the room and tables and chairs set out in the remaining area. A piano is situated to the rear of the building if anyone fancies a quick tickle of the ivories. There is an attractive courtyard garden with bedding plants and seasonal baskets which is a rarity for a busy town such as this.

The Atmosphere
With punters ranging from 20 to 80, there is an eclectic group in attendance, most of whom are local residents or workers. However this pub is largely frequented by its loyal regulars, who might pop in for a swift half after a quick trip to the bookies before going home to her indoors.

The Food
The menu is fairly limited but the food is good. The warm sausage sandwich with red onion chutney (£3.95) is delicious and certainly hits the hunger spot. Other light dishes include whitebait with bread, tartar sauce and salad, also priced at £3.95. A popular main dish is homemade fisherman’s pie with seasonal veg. All desserts are £3.95 and the apple and berry crumble with custard is a firm favourite. A Sunday carvery is also on offer at £5.95.

The Drink
There’s a reasonable choice of draught beers including Fosters, Stella and Gem ale to name a few, with seasonal guest ales also available. The average price is £3 a pint. The likes of Peroni, Holsten Pils and Becks average around £3.50 a bottle.

A glass of white wine starts at £3.65 or £14.25 a bottle for a Rising Star Chenin Blanc, and a red shiraz is £3.95/£16.10. There is a small choice of sparkling wine and champagne, with prosecco costing £3.80/£20.45 and the house champagne at £6.90/£33.20.

The Last Word
The Dog and Bull does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a no nonsense, no frills pub with not much else going on.
