The ViewLondon Review
A quaint little Sam Smith's pub hidden away in the backstreets of Marylebone.
The Venue
Weymouth Mews is a tiny cobbled street in the heart of Marylebone and the Dover Castle is a small unassuming pub located in this pretty stretch. Unless you specifically know where you were going, you’re unlikely to stumble across it. It’s a very pretty little pub, with hanging baskets outside and lots of character. Once inside, it’s larger than it seems from the outside, with a main bar area and a couple of rooms adjacent to this with various forms of seating.
At the back there’s a poky patio garden which doesn’t seem to get much sunlight. A few picnic tables and chairs are here for any smokers who need to pop outside.
The Atmosphere
As it’s off the beaten track for most of the shoppers and commuters in London, the Dover Castle relies on people in the know to pop in. You can find a mix of local residents, workers from the surrounding area and people who’ve found it on the off-chance having a quiet drink in here. The atmosphere is chilled and the bar staff can often be found leaning on the bar chatting to the regulars.
At busy periods, namely Thursday and Friday evenings after work, the pub gets slightly busier, and the fortunate location of being on a quiet mews street means that, in the summer, the clientele can often be found congregating on the cobbles outside.
The Food
This pub offers a typical pub grub menu with light bites such as chicken Caesar salad costing £4.60 or cheesy nachos costing £3.15. For those who want something more substantial, there’s fisherman’s pie served with a selection of vegetables (£6.10), or the beef stout pudding cooked with stout gravy and served with vegetables (£6.10). The pub menu also has a selection of puddings including ginger and butterscotch sponge (£2.80). Food is served here 12noon-3pm and 6pm-9pm, Monday-Friday.
The Drink
The Dover Castle is a Sam Smith’s pub, so expect only their own-brand name beers and spirits to be served. A pint will certainly be much cheaper than some of the pubs nearby. Beers on draught include Old Brewery bitter, a pint of which costs £2.10, and Alpine Lager (also known as ‘Man in the Box’) which costs £2.40.
The usual spirits and mixers are available here, although bear in mind they will be Sam Smith’s own brands and you'll have to head elsewhere for high street brands.
The Last Word
The Dover Castle is a small, cosy pub tucked away in the backstreets of Marylebone. Expect mediocre pub grub and the usual cheap beers. Good for bargain-hunters.
