Recently went to the duke of Sussex in Chiswick for dinner with some friends. I had only had a drink in there before and the food had always looked quite inviting. However by the end of the night we were left feeling close to suicidal from the experience...

We were initially served by the manager (whilst talking and swearing on his mobile phone behind the bar) who looked at me with a rather disgusted expression when i asked him for another drink - sorry mate for letting you rip me off nearly £5 a pint mate!

We had booked a table in the dining room where four of us were cramped on a tiny table next to the staff walkway. Every time the waiter walked past my wife was shoved in the side with not so much as a look of ackknowledgment let alone an apology. Service throughout the evening was all together shocking. I honestly wouldn't trust any of them to run a bath!

The steak was disgraceful, it was chewy and had more fat on it than meat. And to top it all off the bill was an absolute joke... They tried to over charge us THREE TIMES by putting other peoples drinks onto ours - and even by the end of arguing with a waiter (who could hardly speak a word of english) it was an absolute rip off for the stupid amount they made us pay.

In short what a horrible little experience it was. You'll never be seeing me in that foul, jumped-up hole ever again;
I think I 'd rather walk infront of a bus!

I think it's important to mention that since the review from viewlondon and the first reader (in 2007), the food has significantly changed at the Duke. It's definitely a Spanish inspired menu, with a fantastic seafood paella and my personal favourite, black rice with grilled cod / hake served with aioli. Whilst I am not from there, I could not comment on the authenticity of the food, but if I go by the number of Spanish people watching their team go through the rounds and finally winning the world in the Summer, I would think that the food is well received by the natives! For the natives of this country, The Sunday roast is also fantastic and very good value, compared to other venues in London (and so is the fish & chips!). Finally, the service is impeccable, very friendly and efficient. Fantastic venue for a lazy Saturday or Sunday lunch. Considering how busy it gets and that unless you booked a table, you are unlikely to be able to have lunch there, it is a testament that this is a favourite with the locals.

A superb gastropub in Chiswick- although we live a good 7mns cab ride, we always come here for some hearty tasty comforting food and it never fails to satisfy us.
The service is great too, which is a bonus.
At times a little too oily though, the food is overall fantastic varied and original! Would recommend.

Felt complelled to write some kind words about this place. Having read a glowing review in The Guardian I popped in for lunch with my mother after visiting the Henry Moore exhibition at Kew Gardens. The food was faultless - simply prepared but delicious - and the staff made us feel very welcome. I had a perfectly cooked and extremely tasty steak while my mother enjoyed a trout with almonds and runner beans. We were so full after that and all the bread we were given that we had to share a pudding - apple and blackberry crumble - which tasted as good, if not better (shush), as my mothers own.
