As the name suggests this venue sits facing a green - Parsons Green – and, as such, is a welcome sight after a day in the office. The Duke is a pub, with foodie leanings, offering hearty traditional dishes and a comfortable atmosphere.

The Venue
The decor is one of a traditional English pub that’s had a facelift. It’s got all the basic features with the added embellishment of the odd Corinthian column, hanging lights and a fireplace. It’s reasonably large but its long shape means there’s not actually that many seats in the bar area. If you’re looking to eat, though, this shouldn’t be a problem as they’ve got a designated restaurant area on the other side of the space. A small strip of chairs hug the exterior of the building, for those who prefer the outdoors, but due to the building’s positioning they tend not to see too much sun.

The Atmosphere
The clientele are often working professionals in their 20s and 30s, who have come straight from the office for a much needed bevvy. Service can be a bit slow when it’s busy but generally you will be served quickly. Quite a proactive venue, the Duke has organised events on the adjacent Parsons Green, such as the Village Fair and Taste of Young's.

The Food
The menu is traditionally English with some continental twists here are there. For a starter the goat’s cheese and apple filo parcels, priced at £6.65, are a delightfully light and crispy pastry filled with rich goat’s cheese, and are served with a rocket salad. The bangers and mash is a popular option for mains (£9.75). Dished-up in a large bowl, you receive Young’s London bangers, atop mash and a flood of tasty homemade onion gravy. You can also order sides to accompany your meal like a healthy vine tomato and red onion salad for £3.60, or the more hearty fat chips (£3.60).

The Drink
A decent wine list sports an uncommonly large number of wines by the glass, which makes a nice change. Their house red is a rather quirky Carignan, Le Sanglier de la Montagne, for £5.40 a large glass, and £15.25 a bottle. There are some dessert wines, port and Champagnes on offer as well, plus quite a few cocktails ranging between £5.50 and £7.50. Naturally for a Young’s pub, they serve ales – Special is £3.35 a pint, and bottles of London Special Ale are £3.75.

The Last Word
A great stop-off for a business lunch or after work drinks, the Duke on the Green is conveniently located just across from Parsons Green station. With a number of well-cooked dishes and a good selection of wines and ales, it has a broad appeal.
