The ViewLondon Review
The Dundee Arms isn’t a destination to flock to; however, although it operates beneath the radar, its regulars seem to like it just fine.
The Venue
The Dundee Arms is located on Cambridge Heath Road, a stretch of tarmac that finds itself between better known streets that make for more popular scenes. Despite finding itself on a bland thoroughfare, this pub has a few surprises within.
In the open air it looks just like any of the other buildings on the street although it does employ the use of a sandwich board out front. Once coerced through the door, the fine balance of the interior makes an immediate impression. The collection of heavy William Morris style curtains, burrowed arches in the walls and vases of flowers create a town house charm, but the dusty old floor, array of cheap, nasty armchairs and darkness detract from the charm. It’s therefore left somewhere between country estate and council estate, crying out for the curtains to be pulled so that a little light can rosy it all up.
There’s a good selection of seating in the ample venue and there are big screens showing Sky Sports at either end. Out the back there is a beer garden of sorts that you can escape to if it feels a little too cloudy inside.
The Atmosphere
This may not be one of your fancy members’ only bars but those thick curtains work wonders at keeping out unwanted glares. Loud music and the distorted sounds of karaoke leak through the windowpanes until late into the night as those in the circle of trust throw down within.
Besides the lock-in crowd and a whole lot of regulars, the Dundee Arms attracts some passing traffic and despite the tatty facade and gloomy first five minutes inside, it’s friendly and accommodating enough not to bolt once your last drops have been drained.
The Food
When the football is on the big screen the big match experience is made all the more ‘real’ by the option of a Pukka Pie from the hot cabinet on the bar. There are also hot sausage rolls and crisps to complete the choice.
The Drink
With a list of draught beers that includes Stella, Carlsberg, Carling and Fosters, you’re quick to realise that the curious, colourful choices aren’t what draw people into the Dundee Arms. Apart from the draught lagers there are a handful of commercial ales and a small selection of wine. Offers are chalked onto the board outside and the appeal of two Jamesons for £3 might pull some people in.
The Last Word
The Dundee Arms is a typical East End local and you shouldn’t be deterred from having a drink if you’re passing by.
