The ViewLondon Review
Clerkenwell, home to architects, designers, new media types and previously the location of Jamie Oliver's operational HQ. Judging from the numbers of rare denim-clad strutters out on the street, it’s a wonder any of our hip magazines or nihilistic novels ever make it to print!
An hour or so spent plugging away at the Power Mac probably proves so taxing that a few beers at lunchtime is inevitable. If this is the case then Dust provides a pretty awesome destination to exorcise those mid-morning mouse mat blues with a drink and a bite to eat.
This Clerkenwell stalwart has been around for a while, but its neo-industrial design hasn't faded at all and it seems to be as popular as ever. Structurally it is slightly Tardis-like, opening up to double height at the back, though the slightly spaced out seating provides less covers than they probably could manage.
A variety of modern artwork and photos cover the walls, most of which appear available for sale (for all those wannabe Kelly Hoppens out on the piss!)
I visited mid-week at lunchtime, and found the predicted mix of all-in-black (Issey Miyake darling) creatives with a smattering of scruffy production types providing an even balance.
Everyone seemed to be tucking in to robustly scrumptious food of one sort or another, though the burgers looked best from where I was sitting! This was no poncy Soho juice bar either - alcohol was the order of the day, and I didn't see a bottle of mineral water in evidence anywhere.
Come the evening, I expect the joint gets pretty packed (the bar offered a selection of spirits to rival the nearby Match bar), and I'm assured that it’s heaving at weekends.
Whether you work in the area, are just passing, or even formulating plans for a big night out, Dust's cool and calm atmosphere should ensure that it's high on your list of top bars to visit.
