The ViewLondon Review
The Flask is the kind of pub that makes people want to live in North London. Quaint, almost to the point of being a characateur of a quintessential English pub, it’s a happy escape from the rat race.
The Venue
This famous pub lies on a leafy hill in the charming area of Highgate Village, an area that barely resembles London such is its beauty. The outdoor area is a highlight, especially in the summer months when it’s always full to bursting, which is no mean feat given its size. Inside, it’s a labyrinth of little areas, comprising of cosy rooms ideal for whiling away a winter’s afternoon when the outdoor area is solely the domain of smokers crowding beneath heaters. Wooden beams on the ceiling, open fireplaces and original features such as the beautiful windows make this a homage to what pubs in London should be.
The Atmosphere
Ever wondered where the residents of Walford drink when the Queen Vic is burned to the ground? Well, Eastenders Phil Mitchell is a regular here and he’s only one of many British celebrities that like to drink at The Flask. Otherwise, you’ll find a mix of well to do locals and trendy twentysomethings showing off how ‘in the know’ they are about possibly the worst kept secret in London. The staff look like something out of a catalogue for Cool Are Us but they aren’t too good to serve and ensure punters don’t go too long without a beer in hand.
The Drink
Always known for its good beer selection, Fullers took over ownership of The Flask in 2009 and have reinvented the beer choice, although not to its detriment. Fullers own beers like the popular Honey Dew can always be found on tap here and the prices aren’t the cheapest, although this is Highgate Village so is to be expected. Unusual Belgian options like Frambozen bolster the selection in bottles so that even the regulars struggle to get bored by the choice.
The Last Word
The Flask is a famous North London for a reason, and one that’s worth travelling to if you don’t hail from the area. If only it’s to be in with the chance to shout ‘Phiiiiil!’ in your best Peggy Mitchell voice.
