The ViewLondon Review
This pub has changed names a few times in its history but its latest incarnation aims to bring a sense of community to the drinking experience of locals.
The Venue
The Furzedown can be found in a smart, period building with its black and white colour scheme enlivened with flashes of blue signage. Inside, the interior is modern without losing its pub heart. The neutral colour walls are warmed by swathes of wooden furniture, dark red leather sofas, a pretty tiled floor, cute granny lamps and lots of foliage. Even the criss-cross wooden beams on the ceiling show care and attention to all aspects of the pub’s design. The large windows flood the space with light and include ornate arching windows that add to a sense of history. Want entertainment? Have a few games on their pool table, that should do the trick. That or sit with your eyes glued to the big screen TVs, of course. This is well balanced with the great outdoors (well, ish) out in the beer garden.
The Atmosphere
The Furzedown is a real locals' pub, mainly because of its location. And this really adds to the community spirit of the place. From the book exchange to regular pool tournaments and live events like jazz and weekly pub quizzes, they clearly want to keep their regulars entertained and happy. If that’s not quite enough for you then you can always use the free Wi-Fi and socialise online instead. It’s better than talking to real people, right?
The Food
There is a small menu at The Furzedown with a couple of pizza and pasta dishes, a few sandwiches and a small choice of mains like fish and chips or steak. It’s not particularly exciting but the prices are incredibly competitive. £6 for fish and chips or £5.50 for goulash? Yes, you read that right. That’s almost the price of a pint in some London pubs.
The Drink
There’s a great choice of draught beer here, with Budweiser, Carling, Fosters, Stella Artois, John Smith Smooth, Guinness and Strongbow all available on tap. This is extended further by a strong bottle choice. Otherwise, there’s a pretty standard pub wine list, although it’s well priced with a house bottle coming in at under £15.
The Last Word
The Furzedown’s refurbishment a couple of years ago has really done the job and produced a strong all rounder for the locals. If you can brave a bus then it may be worth seeking out for a pool tournament.
