The ViewLondon Review
Galvin at Windows stands head and shoulders above the majority of London restaurants. Not only does its lofty location on the 28th floor of the Park Lane Hilton hotel afford it some of the best views in the capital, the mastery of the cuisine is revered by even the most hardcore foodies. The VenueGalvin at Windows benefits from a location which is nothing short of spectacular. Set foot in the lift, register approving glances as you select the 28th floor and before you can click your heels you’ll have arrived at the top of the Park Lane Hilton. A pre or post dinner drink in the bar is worth lingering over, nose pressed up against the glass whilst pointing out familiar landmarks – don’t worry, the staff have seen it all before and seem to revel in the fantastic location as much as their guests.
Move on to the restaurant and the views are equally impressive. Prime seating is located opposite the floor to ceiling windows. For the ultimate in semi private dining The Balcony is the area to ask for, just make sure you're looking your best as sitting here guarantees that you'll attract attention.
The AtmosphereThe restaurant offers refined dining at its very best – discreet yet friendly service, beautifully presented, mouthwatering cuisine and of course, those views. The gentle murmur of conversation is indicative of the type of diners Galvin at Windows attracts (no raucous conversations here) ensuring a relaxing yet formal night out that only the very best, and very expensive, restaurants can create. Sink into the ridiculously comfy chairs, gaze out of the window at the pinpricks of light far, far below and prepare to be spoilt rotten.
The FoodThe chefs have clearly given each dish their undivided attention – lavishing more time, care and patience on their creations than most parents reserve for their offspring. Presentation is clearly important but never at the expense of quality. For starters, savour deliciously plump Scottish scallops or the light but no less more-ish plate of salmon and crab with a lemon and caviar dressing.
Recommended main courses include the monkfish, wrapped in bacon and surrounded by a thick sauce of creamed lentils, and the equally tasty sea bass with pommes ecrasees and red wine shallots. If you’re not a fan of fish, dig into the roasted leg of Pyrenean lamb, a dish intended for two to share. Puddings worth saving room for include the all-important creme brulee with a twist and a peanut butter dessert filled with tiny balls of liquid chocolate.
The DrinkFrom a cocktail or a glass of champagne to start your meal to the wines expertly recommended by the sommelier, the drink is more than a match for the food. End your evening with a snifter in the bar area and play spot the celebrity.
The Last WordGalvin at Windows has garnered an impressive reputation as a destination restaurant. Whilst it may not be cheap, if you are looking for world class cuisine, superior service and spectacular views there are few places finer.
