I'm very confused by the review below: basically because the George is owned by the National Trust and when I went there was 'Olde Worlde' on toast!

If anything it was a little twee and touristy (charging over the odds for a pint because they are the ancient/Charles Dickens place).

Apart from the novelty value, I found the food OK (some nice veggie options like hot goats cheese and pepper sandwiches) and their house bitter was pleasant, too.

The only problem was it is overpriced for what it is, simply because of the tourism aspect.

A quick update- watch your change. We've been there a bit since the last review and had a couple of experiences wih barmaids giving back the wrong change- by a few quid, not pennies- at busy times, you need to tell them quickly because (and fair enough) they won't sort it out if you go away, realise, and then come back.

Hi, I went to the George last night for a quick casual drink with a friend as was in the London Bridge area. The experience was unpleasant to say the least. Beautiful old coach inn suffering from an unsympathetic modernization; we sat in the featureless far room under blazing lights. We ordered a glass of red wine, to be told they only had one wine by the glass. For £8.50 we were served two tiny screw-top bottles with generic Spanish labels, as if we were in a plane. We were served throughout by a monosyllabic and aggressive skinhead. Have never been served wine like this before, even in the cheapest bar, and it proved to be undrinkable vinegar. We politely tried to return it, asking whether he had tried it himself and whether there was anything else they offered. He rudely said he wasn't a wine drinker and couldn't comment, that no-one else had a problem and that they only sold this wine by the glass -- we would have to buy a bottle if we wanted anything else. We're not vignophiles by any means and didn't expect anything special but it really was terrible, certainly not wine which should be sold at £4.25 a glass. Our barman's manner throughout was completely rude and uncaring. Finally he agreed to exchange the two glasses for the cheapest bottle as long as we paid the difference of £4.50 -- but then refused to take payment by card as it was under £5. We asked him to make an exception and he refused. Without getting into a full-blown argument, his aggressive and threatening manner completely ruined our evening. We felt cheated as in effect we had to pay for a bottle to get drinkable wine when we had just wanted a quick glass. We just wanted to pass on our feedback about the poor selection of wine and terrible service we experienced.

The George Inn is a pleasant old coaching inn with convivial surroundings. However, the beer range is limited, the quality of beer served is only average and snotty bar staff start haranguing you for your glasses by about 5 past 11.
