A pleasant, popular pub on Chiswick High Road, George IV is a Fuller’s pub that’s perhaps most notable for the fact it has weekly Headliners Comedy Club events.

The Venue
Just as it does in the foodie stakes, Chiswick punches well above its weight for comedy. Nearby Turnham Green’s The Tabard has guests like Russell Howard, Jenny Éclair and Al Murray and Headliners pulls some big names like Milton Jones, Mick Ferry and the downright hilarious newcomer Imran Yusuf. Accessible to the rear of the pub on Friday and Saturday nights, something that results in snaking queues before showtime, it costs £12 to get in.

The pub itself is classic Fuller’s - black and gold signage and hanging baskets out front, traditional wooden pub inside. There’s a little yard to the rear for smokers or balmier days and plenty of nooks and crannies to hold court inside. Football is shown on plasmas but it’s not the main focus.

The Atmosphere
One of the most popular pubs on the High Road, the George IV hums with a happy air most nights of the week. The comedy means it’s pretty packed on Fridays and Saturdays but, at most other, times you should still be able to grab a seat.

The Food
Decent quality pub grub, including the steak and ale pie (£9.25) and fish and chips are on offer.

The Drink
Fuller’s Griffin Brewery isn’t far from here, so the London Pride (£3.15 a pint) doesn’t have far to travel and is well-kept. The likes of ESB, Chiswick, Honey Dew and Discovery are also joined by a guest ale. Kronenbourg (£3.70 a pint) and Heineken provide for lager fans and spirits, such as Bacardi or Hennessey are £3-£3.50 for a single measure.

The Last Word
A justifiably popular pub with a good selection of well-kept ales and the added bonus of the comedy nights should one of the guest names tickle your fancy, the George IV is a very reliable, good-natured pub in a nice part of London.
