The ViewLondon Review
The George uses its wits in the battle for the Soho crowd coming correct with football and rugby on big screens and smiles to match the entertainment.
The Venue
The George certainly doesn’t stand out on the corner of D’arblay Street, there’s not a lot of golden brass on the facade and generally the pavement is fairly empty of drinkers, but inside there’s a confidence about its appearance. You could say that it found its look years ago and self-consciousness doesn’t exist in the carved out wooden boat of a pub that it became.
The look is brown and grainy with one big solid bar the centre point of the interior. The booths in the corners are a good reason for big groups to visit and although things are quite tight you won’t feel cramped, just comfortably squashed. There isn’t much of note about the safe and solid look and the appeal is all in the atmosphere.
The Atmosphere
If you stroll down Dean Street you’ll notice the similarities between the pubs as much as you will the people in them, so to find something different is quite a coo. Whilst media soldiers struggle for space in the Nellie Dean just around the corner, The George hosts a more relaxed soiree. Instead of a patronage made up of those coming straight from the office there is the feeling that things are winding up here, rather than down. There’s no real demographic that seem to hold sway, but a diverse mixture. It’s a good choice for a weekend football match, with decent amounts of space for seating and a good-natured crowd.
The Drink
The grand bar holds its spirits well and all the usual big brands are there to be seen. Prices in the area are high and The George follows the leaders with its prices, too. The house white wine is the best value in terms of the grape and by the bottle is always the way to do it if you can.
There is a range of Staropramen, Fosters, and Hoegaarden amongst others for the beer drinkers and London Pride on tap.
The Last Word
Despite its pedestrian appearance, The George can show you a good time. If you’re looking for a place for beer and football without the ‘Waheys’ and ‘Get ins!’ of the lads, then this is it.
