The ViewLondon Review
Found yourself strolling around Greenwich? Not in a rush? Then pop into the Gipsy Moth for a pint. The VenueGiven the popularity of Greenwich, and the prime location of the Gipsy Moth (situated as it is next door to the Cutty Sark, the river, the car park and the tube station, and just a few seconds stroll to the hugely popular Sunday market), it’s little surprise that this pub is almost always packed to the rafters at weekends. Flocked red wallpaper, comfy leather couches and wooden tables make it the ideal place to stop in and enjoy a glass of red and some good company (provided you can find a seat). The pub also has a well sized beer garden at the back.
The AtmosphereVery busy but laid back, although unfortunately the latter point also extends to the bar staff, who are uninterested in rushing themselves on your account. That said, the pub is cosy and welcoming, attracting an unpretentious but youthful crowd, from first-daters to thirtysomething groups and even students in obligatory casual attire, putting the world to rights over bottles of Sauvignon Blanc.
The FoodThe kitchen offers mainly traditional pub food with a twist, such as chicken sandwiches with tarragon mayonnaise, or wild boar sausage and homemade mash. The food is freshly prepared, but the portions are small for the price. During busy periods, it can take a long time for the food to arrive, and on weekends throughout the summer the barbeques that are held also get very packed.
The DrinkThe Gipsy Moth serves Landlord (which has won more awards than any other British beer), a good selection of draught lagers and Belgian beers. There are also specials such as pitchers of Pimms, all of which are reasonably priced for the area. There are no alcopops available, perhaps to discourage students and groups of young people
The Last WordGipsy Moth could do better. Thanks to its location and pleasant interior, it can enjoy success with relatively little effort. Still, not bad for a swift half.
