The ViewLondon Review
You can’t miss this small blue hub. GJs has built a name for itself as one of Garratt Lane’s happening little bars.
The Venue
GJs sits in a perfect spot on Garratt Lane - it lies equidistant between Wandsworth Town and Earlsfield train stations, about a 15 minute walk from both. The first thing you notice about this bar is its vibrant royal blue colouring. Awnings, hanging shrubbery and a cute little beer garden give it a certain quintessential class.
Inside, the heavy wooden floors, classic bar and gorgeous beer garden make this place feel quite special and set it apart from the old man boozers of the area. Colourful hanging plants, large umbrellas and rustic wooden furnishings surround the beer garden, which also acts as a gorgeous outdoor dining area.
The Atmosphere
Although the staff at GJs are really friendly, the clientele can divide. During the week, depending on what sport there is on offer on the big screen, the volume of people in the bar varies. On non-sports nights the vibe is relaxed and chilled out – just a few locals going for a catch-up pint. At the weekend, the crowd is slightly more rambunctious with rugby-shirted guys and off-duty office girls catching up en masse. The bar mostly teems with sports fans and rowdy locals at the weekend, making the atmosphere a little rough around the edges although never unbearable.
The Food
The food is pretty good at GJs. You can grab the usual potato wedges, spicy chicken wings and a selection of tasty sauces but there’s also a choice of samosas, mini spring rolls and tempura prawns, all great value at the £3.50 mark. For £4.50, you can grab a beef, lamb, chicken or veggie burger with a choice of sauces from balsamic jam to a more traditional tomato and onion relish. It has to be noted that a vegetarian burger usually equals boring but in this case is definitely worth the money and really fills the spot.
There is also a good selection of paninis and baguettes, baked potatoes, nachos, pasta and salads as well as mains like Cumberland sausages and an 8oz rib eye steak. Their spit roast is popular and features a pig roasting for hours on a big spit.
The Drink
A small glass of the house white wine will set you back just £11.95 a bottle. The choice is huge and doesn’t break the bank with the most expensive bottle of white wine being the Chateauneuf du Pape Remy Ferbras costing £29. Prices are similar for reds and roses. For Champagne lovers, you can get the house bottle for only £29. There are also plenty of beers and spirits.
The Last Word
GJs is a great little bar for locals and won’t stretch your purse strings too far.
