The ViewLondon Review
Golden Eagle is a neat little pub, good for a quick drink. With a regular piano night, it adds a nice little twist to your usual pub experience.
The Venue
Golden Eagle can be found on the corner of Marylebone Lane and Bulstrode Street, just off Thayer Street. Less busy than Thayer Street and Wigmore Street, Marylebone Lane provides a nice quiet location for this small old-school pub - and it is small. In fact, it feels very cramped as soon as you step through the front door so for those that like their space this pub definitely isn’t for you.
Keeping to its original features, this is the epitome of an old man’s pub, with the added touch of an upright piano, cleverly packed into the small space. With just a handful of stools and a few small tables for seating - dotted haphazardly about - you’ll be hard pushed to get a seat during the busier evenings.
The Atmosphere
This is one of the few remaining old school pubs - and you’ll either love it or hate it. Golden Eagle is the kind of pub where you order a pint of Guinness in the same glass you’ve nursed all afternoon, and grunt every time the second hand on your watch makes a full revolution. Behind the bar is an old geezer whose stare suggests he is on the brink of turning into the Incredible Hulk. At the bar are the local construction workers getting themselves into a merry state, and lining the tables are the various old boys. Always on first name terms with the barman, always red in the face, and always sitting motionless in the corner staring into their drink.
In the evenings, however, the vibe picks up with regular piano nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and a small TV in the corner – filling this small venue up quickly when a big sporting event is on.
The Drink
Almost all premium spirits cost £2.15, whilst those opting for the deluxe spirits should put aside £2.45 for each drink. A pint of Guinness is very reasonable at £3.05 whilst a Stella will push your purse strings back £3.30. There’s also a decent range of ales and beer, including St Austell's Tribute, Tinners and London Pride.
The Last Word
If you’re a local and you like small, traditional old-school pubs then Golden Eagle is for you. With an unusual inclusion of a piano, adding a twist on your average pub experience, this pub is worth a look.
