Exhibiting all of the best and worst features of a chain pub, Goodmans Field is steady but uninspired.

The Venue
Part of the Wetherspoons chain, Goodmans Field is clean, well looked after, bright, open and ultimately very, very boring. It looks like the lobby bar of an Ibis hotel – blandly generic and devoid of any distinct personality. There is nothing that offends (except maybe the carpet) but by playing it so safe, it becomes unmemorable.

The large space is L-shaped, and no attempt has been made to divide it into different areas, so it just appears vast. Plenty of windows bring in light, but doesn't hide the fact that you’re located on a very busy corner. Thankfully, good double glazing blocks out the noise. Startling blue tiles behind the bar give a punch of colour, but it isn’t really enough. The minimal amount of artwork is too safe.

The Atmosphere
Wetherspoons pubs always seem to be well managed and Goodmans Field is no different. Their staff understand customer service and are speedy and prompt. The clientele here are younger, more budget minded than at other local City bars. There is less cash being flashed about here.

The Food
Goodmans Field has the standard Wetherspoons menu, with extensive choice and excellent pricing. There are 14 value main meals for £3.99. Bargain. Tuesday is Steak Club and Thursday is Curry Club. All of your standard pub items are available, plus a few good veggie options like butternut squash and fire roasted tomato risotto.

For the hung over there are excellent value breakfasts until noon with more than enough salt to balance all of your electrolytes – guaranteed to get you back on your feet after a night of indulgence.

The Drink
Due to their large purchasing power and commitment to supporting the Real Ale movement and British suppliers, there is no shortage of fairly-priced drink options. Draught choices include Fosters, Coors Light, Kronenbourg, John Smiths, Carling, Guinness, Stella, Lucan Premium Czech beer plus Deuchars, Pedigree, Abbot and Greene King Ruddles ales. Cider fans can enjoy draught Kopparberg in Summer Fruits or Pear.

Wine lovers can enjoy temperature controlled draught wine from Fetzer with a Zinfadel Rose, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Merlot by the glass. If that isn't enough, there are excellent value spirits and Lavazza coffee served up cheaper than Starbucks.

The Last Word
For choice, value for money and service, you can't fault Goodmans Field. If only they could jazz up their interior, they would really be on to something great.
