Gordon’s Wine Bar has been around for over hundred years (121 years to be exact). The building itself has been the lodgings on some of england’s finest writers namely Samuel Pepys and Rudyard Kipling. The bar is heaped in tradition and kept accordingly by its own Simon Gordon who took over from the late Luis Gordon. Its interior has been beautifully preserved after all these years albeit a little bit poky I grant you. If you are over 5”8 I propose you mind your head when you take a table at the back of the bar.

It boosts an award winning wine list which is varied and full of attractive wines at very reasonable prices. They have a delicious assortment of Sherries, Madeiras and Ports all served from the barrel. I highly recommend the Tawny Port for first timers. You won’t regret it, it is exquisite. I didn’t have the pleasure to having dinner there but the spread they had laid out looked inviting.

All in all, this bar is a delight. I urge you to go and bring your friends (especially ones from out of town, they’ll love it) But please ensure you get there early if you are going in the weekdays as it is very popular with the locals as an after work knees up.

Such a lovely place! We were tucked away in a corner and it was a lovely- great food, nice wine. The cheese board was delicious with lots of pickles. Strange gooey stuff running down the stone walls though and can be a bit noisy but it's a lovely place for a date or catchup with friends.

My favourite place in London!! Cheese, wine, pickles...other hot foods and amazing wine in a fantastic setting!! Love love love!

Only problem is you can hardly ever find a seat..

A proper wine bar! I have to say, if I hadn't done some research I would have walked by this place thinking it was a shut down branch of Bargain Booze.

However, once inside the place had a lovely historic feel to it - a bit like an old fashioned cellar/dungeon.

The wines we tasted were pretty decent and you could probably take your grandparents in due to the range of sherries also available!

Would have given this place 5 stars if it wasn't so packed and the terrace had been open.

Gordon's wine bar used to be a little known drinking establishment off the beaten path. It is now more popular than it has ever been but if you can get a seat, or served, then its a fabulous place. the wine list is OK to Good and the food well above average (good to excellent).

I have noticed the prices have got a bit silly, courtesy probably of London average earnings and the owner has expanded his outdoor seating area but with it highly efficient staff.

Outside is a bit pokey, too shaded and in the one hour of being there last Thursday I was pestered by 2 x tramps, 1 x busker (sp?) and 1 x charity girl. Also on the downside the house white was "awful" and too warm. Neither used to be the case but Thursday was very busy.

Inside Gordons is wonderfully romantic or atmospheric and noisy. And almost always impossible to get a seat. It is, probably, one of the few remaining genuine wine bars in London which haven't gone 'designer'.

I love Gordon's and I love my wine.
I don't live in London, I live near Liverpool, and every time I visit my friends and family down in London Gordon's is always the first port of call.



Gordon's has a relaxed friendly atmosphere - no wonder half of London goes there after a hard slog in the office! It kind of reminds me of home.



The bar is a firm fave with me though as it's a celler bar it kind of reminds me of an upmarket version of Liverpool's Cavern. It's one of London's simple pleasures, highly recommended.

Gordon's looks dingy and disused from the outside which is great for scaring the tourists off. Inside it's packed and for good reason: Great atmosphere, friendly staff, good wine list, French food galore and candlelit tables hidden under low slung arches.

Only problem with Gordon's is everyone else loves it too and there is never a seat. Maybe I should of written a bad review, erm, yes, don't come here it's rubbish.

Not sure if Gordon's should be called a wine bar. Ok, it serves wine, but it's more medieval pub than yuppie paradise. The food at Gordon's is hit and miss - I've had tasty cheese and meats outside in the summer, and mediocre pies in the winter - guess it depends what time of year you visit.

This is a gem - one of those places you don't want anyone else to find out about. Too late. After work this place is very busy, and finding somewhere to perch can be difficult, which is my only quibble. If you work near by I suggest you pop in on the off chance there's a table spare - you won't regret it if you come up trumps.

Gordon's on Villiers Street is a gem of drinking den - perfect for that after work consumption of port, port and more port!

The vaulted ceiling, the bare stone walls, dingy lighting, tight atmosphere all build up a real community feel - all the drinkers feel like friends.

If the weather permits, everyone piles outside to stand in the adjacent alleyway to drink away in the sun. A drinking institution for all London workers.

Gordon's is an amazing old place in a vaulted cellar next to the Embankment Gardens. Great wines at reasonable prices, candles lighting ancient brick walls and ceilings, and a very buzzy atmosphere. Good food also available.
