The ViewLondon Review
A splendid bar within the Questors Theatre, close to Ealing Broadway, the Grapevine is for members’ only but its bargain pricing makes it remarkably good value. And, if you do become a member, there’s also the opportunity to enjoy the offerings of Europe’s largest community theatre at half price.
The Venue
The Grapevine Bar is on the ground floor of the impressive Questors Theatre. This is one of Europe’s largest and most thriving non-professional drama societies. It houses 20 productions each year with an additional range of workshops and courses. The building is modern-looking but dates back to the 1960s, with facilities that outclass some West End venues. Such is the high standard at the theatre, productions are regularly reviewed by professional critics. The programme includes Shakespeare, comedy, thrillers and musicals.
The Grapevine itself is a cheerful and well-lit room with a distinct alcove area. The long single counter means getting served is a doddle. Furnishing is contemporary and attractive.
The Atmosphere
The Grapevine is inevitably busy before, after and during the intervals of performances. But it’s also a local for many Ealing residents and other folk who appreciate its friendliness and drinks quality. So, besides opening every evening, it also welcomes members on Sunday lunchtimes when there are no theatre performances.
It’s staffed by Questors’ volunteers who treat customers with invariable professionalism and good humour. There’s a cheerfully cosy camaraderie between both sides of the counter. Board games and books are also available to help make the quaffing more enjoyable.
The Drink
Food isn’t served as there’s a separate café. Drink is the main thing and the crowning glory is real ale with five busy hand pumps. Two of these are dedicated to Fuller’s London Pride and Gale’s Seafarers but other beers may include Hopback’s Crop Circle, Snowdonia’s Purple Moose and Hog’s Back’s TEA. There can often be a mild such as Harviestoun’s Born To Be.
The choice varies and members come in expecting something different – and they get it. The one thing that doesn’t vary is beer quality. It’s always superb and the Grapevine has achieved Cask Marque status. The bar is consequently popular with CAMRA members. It’s the current West Middlesex branch Club of the Year and was runner-up for Greater London Club of the Year in 2010.
Pricing at the Grapevine makes Questors Theatre membership one of London’s best bargains. Real ale is only £2.50 a pint; glasses of wine are £1.80 for 125ml and either £2.50 or £3.20 for a 175ml measure; and spirits cost only £1.40 or £1.70 a single. Even marvellous malt whiskies like Laphroaig and Macallan are only £2.50 per 25ml.
Membership is £65 per annum and just £30 for those under 26. As well as easily recouping membership cost at the subsidised bar, there’s the additional attraction of attending many theatre productions at half price - plus a £2 discount for one guest.
The Last Word
Questors Theatre members are justifiably proud of their own Grapevine Bar. Become one of them and combine the delights of drinking and drama.
