The ViewLondon Review
Green and Red is one of the only Mexican restaurants you will come across, outside Mexico that actually serves authentic tasting cuisine. The VenueThe Green and Red cantina is a two level set-up. Downstairs boasts a popular tequila bar which is equally as bustling as the upstairs restaurant. With wooden floors and chairs to match, the decor and style imparts all things casual and Mexican Cantina-like.
The AtmosphereGreen and Red attracts a youthful, experimental crowd, turning the place into an fun-filled affair. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the buzz and its intensity, or then again, it could be fuelled by the tequila.
The FoodThe tacos are real, served with traditional soft corn tortillas (hand-pressed) and authentic salsas such as chipotle and avocado, all in typical earthenware. The bar menu features simple dishes such as chargrilled steak tacos and the simple fresh flavours of the Ceviche (raw fish marinated in citrus juice) is constructed with effortless precision.
Mains are an absolute delight and come in under £15 with dishes such as Birria - lamb shank cooked with beer, cloves and ancho chillies; and Carnitas - pork belly served with a sizeable piece of crackling. The churros (similar to a doughnut) with a thick-spiced Oaxacan chocolate are an indulgent to round off the meal.
The DrinkThere is an extremely impressive tequila menu of liquid gold and every affiliated cocktail known to man. Plus all the national beers you would expect to find. Mexican specials like Cheladas (beer with lime juice and salt) and Micheladas (seasoned and spiced beer) are also on hand.
The Last WordAt last, real Mexican cuisine, not that Tex-Mex stuff, Californians swear by. The food will transport you beyond the bustle of London, evoking the streets of Mexico. Viva Green and Red.
