The ViewLondon Review
Canary Wharf and the surrounding area is saturated with bars, waiting to tempt tired bankers after a tough day at the office. Henry Addington is a less popular choice with many people as there are better known bars to visit, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a star choice. The VenueHenry Addington is located on Mackenzie Walk, right next to the dock. With a terrace area that’s great for warmer weather, it’s nice for sitting outside in the summer. Henry Addington opted to go smoke free before the enforced ban, so they’re well equipped for dealing with the issues facing smokers desperate for a cigarette.
The look of the bar is old man pub – it’s very traditional but does still retain a certain edge, so don’t expect boozy old men to adorn the bar. Instead, suited types come in to escape the sterile nature of Canary Wharf and visit a venue with more charm. There are plenty of seats and the bar is large, airy and well placed to allow for the maximum number of people to queue for drinks without being uncomfortable.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere at the Henry Addington is far more laid back and relaxed than many of its neighbours. Pretension is left at the door and the vibe is friendly and not intimidating. This is especially true during times of big football matches or sporting events when everyone gathers around the big screen and the atmosphere heats up a notch. The staff are friendly and efficient and, even when the bar gets busy, you can expect to be served reasonably quickly and may even get an apology for the wait.
The FoodThe Henry Addington does good quality pub food that is higher priced than pubs such as Wetherspoons or All Bar One. However, you get what you pay for and the food is delicious, well prepared and arrives quickly.
The DrinkThis is a great pub if you want a nice draught beer, including some fruity beers for those not taken with the usual offerings. The bar is well-stocked and contains all the usual spirits, wines, ales and lagers. Although they don’t have a cocktail menu, they can rustle up cocktails such as White Russians on request.
The Last WordThis is a great venue for escaping the usual sterile bars of the Wharf and enjoying a nice evening in a relaxed atmosphere.
