I am unclear what is going on here,

Someone has worked really hard to bring this fantastic venue to streatham and all I see is some people hating on her achievement.

Not everyone is going to have a positive experience and that is fine but it would be nice if people complained in a more constructive way.

It is almost as if they are wanting the venue to fail.

It is so hard to find decent venues for musicians to perform, a venue who care about the musicians ensuring that they are given a platform to play their music without customers chatting loudly throughout their performance.

I say good on you management set the standard and you know what if those people do not want to come to a great venue to listen to great music then so be it.

Do Not Change A Thing

I for one will be heading down to the Hidaway on the 18th May to see the excellent Myke Master Band, enjoy some good food and soak up that lovely Jazz atmosphere.

Using an offer from Groupon, I booked for a group of 8 and arrived promptly for an evening of friends, food and Jazz music,Our offer included two courses and a free drink (of which the restaurant had only two cocktails to choose from) We ordered our two courses and saved the cocktail until the end of the night, when we got them they were served in large glasses but contained Coke, lemon juice and ICE !! if there were to be a tot of alcohol in them you wouldn't find it...The venue is totally gorgeous but that's it !You can only sit in tables of 4 so if more than 4 you have to sit at separate tables. The food is ok and there are alot of waiting staff which is good, but dare you wish to have a conversation when the band is on you are told repeatedly to "SHHHHHH" I actually believe our party were told off more in this restaurant then when we were all at school 20 years ago.The band were self indulgent, aside the fantastic singer who only came on for one song (shame !) IF you want to eat and talk this is not the place to go.. I have never seen a restaurant clear so quickly after people had finished their dinner, probably because they may have wanted to hold a conversation elsewhere with their friends/partners !!!Cannot see a reason to return here, great shame as the venue really is gorgeous, very disappointed :(

The hideaway is a jazz cafe, you go there to listen to great music, if you wanted to spend all night chatting, surely a group on voucher for a restaurant minus the jazz would have been more suitable.

I went there on Sunday night for the first time, there was a great atmosphere, for music lovers I recommend it!

I can't put into words just how great this band was, I was truly blown away I love them and cannot wait to see them again jazz funk fusion at its very best.

Correction:
By mistake I have mentioned the wrong show...Ciyo: Two Sides(Jan21) is the show I wanted to refer to in my comment,(although we did see Dave O'Higgins on a previous occasion).
-And incidentally, both where excellent.

We came over to Hideaway for the the Dave O'Higgins show and we where thoroughly pleased.
Comparatively to Ronnie Scott's or 606, one gets much better value for the money.
The sound was great, the decor is pretty and the food was good.
We came slightly earlier and the young door-person seemed a bit confused as to what to do with us.For a moment we felt a bit lost.
Apparently the bar staff where not very keen on taking in people before seven...
But it all was promptly sorted by a more mature gentleman manager, that in a professional and friendly manner made sure that we where taken care of, from beginning to end.
We enjoyed it,recommend it and will be back again soon.

I attended the Hideaway in Streatham this evening for a resident comedy evening. The show was very entertaining, the establishment surprisingly modern and pleasant.

However the service of the door staff was very slow, it took 15 mins to pay to enter the event, yet when we got in there it was not overly full. On a good note the bar staff service was decent and was delivered well.

However it was the attitude of the female manager which left much to be desired. She was rude, argumentative, and arrogant. She was also not shy of voicing her racial stereotypical assumptions, of the guests attending this event while outside in the smoking area. For this reason I shall never return to this venue for any event under any circumstance.

I have come up from southampton on a number of times to the hideaway and have had consistently brilliant evenings of superb food and entertainment. I found the staff and management approachable, friendly and attentive. The gig is always great value for money and always worth the trip. Good sitelines to the stage and excellent and thoughtfully run sound system. 100% superb.

I visited Hideaway on Saturday for the second time the venue was not fully booked but I was meeting a friend so I arrived early and was shown to our table, my partner arrived 15 minutes later but was told that I have not arrived and rather than be shown to the table was told to wait by the sign that said wait to be seated. After 20 minutes they went to the toilet and the decided to walk through the restaurant area and found me. We were both annoyed as I had ordered and my food had just arrived with my guest, 45 minutes later after I arrived. Although the performance was good we had to eat our dessert during it as we started l late, the food was OK the waiter Edward was great but the start tarnish the whole evening. We ask them to take the desserts £12 of the bill total £75 for there their poor seating organisation. The manager asked us to repeat what happened three times and just frustrated us, there was never any apology and offered us coffees by this time they had lost my custom and patients and I just wanted to leave; then the owner chased us out of the building stating that she has the artist to pay VAT etc.. stating that we can go to Ronnie Scotts and pay much more...shame about the management!

Having recently moved to the area, I discovered "The Hideaway". What a fantastic place. I had the pleasure of seeing Soul Purpose - The Diva Summer party - Awesome! The music was fantastic. The venue brilliant. I ordered the Steak which just melted in my mouth, and the wine was lovely and chilled. All the staff were very friendly and attentive even though it was a very busy night! The atmosphere was brilliant and I can't wait to visit again. Well done! It's so great to have a venue like this in Streatham

The music here was great, the food and wine average, but the service really wasn't good at all. There didn't seem to be any system of waiting staff being assigned to serve certain tables, and the result was chaotic; several times we'd spend ages trying to catch a waiter's attention, and then once we'd finally managed to order something 2 or 3 more would come along in quick succession and ask if we needed anything, which was annoying. We had to ask to order drinks, ask for menus, then our mains were brought with our pre-dinner cocktails despite having explicitly asked to have them afterwards. The worst part was after the meal when we ordered some coffees and waited about 15 minutes until they were finally brought out - at which point the waitress carrying them walked straight past us and left them on another, empty table! They sat there for a good 20 mins before another waiter realised and brought them to us, by which point they were obviously cold and the music almost over, so we said we didn't want them any more. The waitress who'd left them came over to ask if we wanted anything else (another lack of communication between the staff), and when I explained what had happened she didn't apologise, she just said that the order had had the wrong table number - which of course wasn't our fault and is hardly an excuse for them being left on a clearly empty table for so long without anyone noticing. It really spoilt the second half of the show for me (also not helped by trying to see over the head of a waiter talking to the couple in front of us, who had been charged for drinks they didn't even have). A real shame as this could be a great venue, but a bit more organisation and efficiency from the staff would go a long way.

I have not had as bad as experience as I had last night at Hideaway for a long long time. The food was inedible, I had the burger and it was too peppery and had the texture of glue, the chips were undercooked and still hard in the middle, rather like frozen chips. The house red wine was disgusting. The service was slow, I saw people leaving their seats to get their own menus and order the wine from the seperate bar area to save time. At one point I saw a waiter spill an item of food from someone's plate on the counter top and just pick it up and put it back on the plate. The dessert was again terrible. The music was great but we didn't stay for the second half because the whole eating and drinking experience was ruined.

Went there 26th March 2011, Soothsayers were playing live. They were very good. The atmosphere in the club was great. Service was very good. Food was very good had Jerk chicken and rice and peas. Wine was ok could have been better, but you can't have it all. Fellow clienteles were very friendly, people spoke to me in the toilets when I went outside for a cigarette. Just a great night what can I say. Spoke to the members of the band and they were really friendly. Would highly recommend you going there. We will definitely be going there again.

I can honestly say that this is one of the nicest clubs iv been to. When i think of a jazz bar i think of a broken down, shabby set up with a man sitting on his amp in the corner of the room, playing his guitar and a bar full of whisky drinkers. This is not the case! I have recently moved to London from the West Midlands and i have always been into my jazz and soul music, i don't know if i just happened to go to one of the best nights they had or if the club is always such a substantial cut above the rest, but i think the Hideaway should not be a well kept secret. Its an experience for all musicians and music lovers to have. Its clean, well looked after, modern and just enough candle light to relax and forget about the day. The staff seem happy, well informed, and genuine! The stage set up is clearly done by professionals with a beautiful grand piano in the corner of the stage, and although there is whisky on sale at the bar the main focus is the range of well presented cocktails and wines available for all tastes. The only reason why i haven't given a 5 star rating is because i underestimated the popularity of the band 'Soul Purpose' and i was unable to get as close to the stage as i would have liked, but to solve that problem next time i will book in advance.

What a great night out! I've been a few times now, still can't believe that we now have a venue in the area that feels like you're in the West End - without having to shell out for an overpriced taxi home!
My first couple of visits were for a couple of real "soulful" nights - Wayne Hernandez was simply fantastic, but I came back on a much more traditional jazz night (not something I'm hugely experienced with) for a romantic dinner - what a perfect venue. Candlelight, great food, great music - I've seen moans below about a "no talking" policy - but as a newly converted jazz fan I can see why it's a really good move. You wouldn't sit there chatting away at the theatre, not when great performers are trying to put on a show for you, and I don't see any reason to treat a band who are playing for you with real passion any differently. Even when sat fairly close to the band, it all helped create a really intimate atmosphere on a special night out. Full marks here, make sure you give it a try!

I was delighted to find such a great place in Streatham, which actually happened by accident and both myself and my friends were very pleased with it and had a fantastic time. I think that the quality of the sound is amazing and events and food are very good value for money. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
I have been there twice and I will definitely go back and recommend the place to people who know how to appreciate quality music and delicious food.
I totally disagree with the negative comments, I am not sure if whoever wrote them has just had bad luck or if maybe just didn't fit in with the club, as you gotta be able to appreciate fine quality music and not everybody can!

Just wanted to express my delight in finding the Hideaway. Four of us came on saturday to see the Dave O'Higgins Quartet who were absolutely brilliant. The food was delicious and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Friendly, welcoming and attentive and fast service. I'm really puzzled by the negative reviews here. To be honest, I'm glad to have found a place where you can really listen to the music. So often these days, people just shout above the sounds and I really do wonder why they bother coming. It's just plain rude to the bands and to other punters who have come to listen. We'll definitely be coming again and I've already told friends about the place. So good luck to everyone involved at Hideaway and to anybody who is thinking of going - go! You'll have a wonderful night out.

Firstly, this ain't no Ronnie Scotts or 606 Club: It could offer great value for money as it is cheap and the artists are good, but it seems the old adage "If it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't true" is borne out at this place. I've been a few times now and have obviously been very unlucky compared to the other reviewers here (unless they're made up?). The artists are very good. The sound quality is very good. The venue is good, if a little sterile and 'designed' and the food, if you're lucky enough to a) be offered any, and b) actually get it, is also very good. The service is appalling - last week (which is definitely going to be the last time) we didn't get a drink for nearly an hour, had to beg again and again for a menu, only to be served the wrong food, much, much later. By that time we were so hungry we accepted it and ate it! There is much more, but I shan't bore you with all the details. ALL our neighbouring tables were having similar problems. I saw people just get up a leave. On busy nights (of which there aren't many in my experience) the service is embarrassingly bad, although I have experienced the same when the staff outnumbered the guests. My advice is eat before you get there and be prepared to go to the bar yourself - like a kind of music pub where you're not allowed to speak - if you want a drink as otherwise what should be a relaxed and enjoyable evening out will be spoilt. It pains me to slag off what could be so good for the area (and jazz music!) but I suspect when the money runs out it'll cease to exist, soon, which will be a great shame as this place has so much potential. I doubt they keep customers for long - I'm a local and I certainly don't know any!

This is a fantastic venue. A great place to enjoy live musicians. The food is terrific too. When I have been, service has been exemplary and friendly. A club of this quality would not be out of place in the West End, but here it is in Streatham! I do not understand some of the negative reviews at all, as my experience has been very different. They must have been unlucky. My only criticisms are that my dessert wasn't of as high a standard as my main course on the one occassion I tried a dessert; fiddling with sound equipment on stage during a set should preferrably be avoided; membership should bring more benefits. I would love some kind of season ticket to be available. Support this venue. It's a gem.

I have been to the Hideaway more than a dozen times , I can honestly say that I have never once been disappointed either with the music or the food. The prices are ludicrously cheap and represent a fantastic value for money.
I'm old enough to remember a great place that was about 50 metres away from The Hideaway called the Peacock Club with live bands every night , listened to Jerry Dorsey who performed there and later on became the world famous star Engelbert Humperdinck. The Hideaway somehow reminds me of the Peacock Club...
The Hideway is for me one of the finest Jazz clubs and eateries in London , above all it is not pretentious like some exorbitantly priced and overrated establishments in London.

Don't bother! They have done a nice job with the decor and to be fair the food is fab but the people that run Hideaway are a bunch of pretentious idiots who are so out of touch it is untrue. Fancy telling people on a night out that they should refrain from talking to one another, clearly they haven't been to any real jazz bars where they wouldn't dream of spoiling your experience in this way. Then to add insult to injury the sound manager continued to chat to all of her friends - apparently this type of chatting was ok! Steer well clear!

no one likes hypocrisy - but as a jazz musician who's played in more than a few jazz clubs, a no talking policy is pretty normal in high standard clubs... Ronnie's ... 606 etc... Anyway, I'm off to Hideaway tonight, hope my experience is better than yours! :)

I had the good fortune to go to The Hideaway last night and catch the second set of The Chris Garrick Quartet and Oh My God!, I was absolutely enthralled. The line-up was incredible, real world-class masters in John Etheridge, Alec Dankworth and Russ Morgan and Chris himself. You couldn't hope to hear more sensitive and passionate playing anywhere. We didn't eat a meal as we had gone for the jazz but the bar snacks were great; interesting and reasonably priced. The service was excellent, discreet and with a smile, so I can only think the previous problems have been ironed out now. Joy of joys for clubs and restaurants in London, there is a car park and that always makes life easier. I can't recommend The Hideaway enough. I will certainly be back for more.

I've been travelling to Streatham a lot quite recently and i caught glimpse of a keyhole next to a boarded up place called The Saloon! It didn't register at first but i had heard of The Hideaway before and was tempted to see someone perform here a while back but because i've never really had the need to venture into Streatham before until now, not only for work reasons but now i can go to a fancy jazz Latin funky place that sounds similar to Ginglik, Ronnie Scotts and The Pigalle Club, in terms of membership, music and dining! All three are exclusive hideouts in Central London and im glad we have something like this, that takes me 20 mins by bus to get to.
I have read the past reviews and i can't believe so many people want to bad mouth this place, its like a high scale venue is attracting the scum of south London! But i like how management deals with such scum. Everyone wants to listen to music, well, everyone who wants to listen to good music. You pay the money for good music and people spoil it for others. I've always hated that and im glad you guys can control this. Its good that they wont be coming anymore, could do with less people of that sort in a venue like this. I've never been, as i've said, and im looking forward to visiting soon to see Byron Wallen. Hope its a good night and the food tastes nice, thinking of having the artichoke as i've never had it before! Tempted to pick some up at the supermarket but I'll wait to see how you guys prepare! Is there a dress code? I give it Four Stars as i like how it sounds!

Went to the Hideaway last night for the first time and all I can say is. At last. A great jazz/comedy venue within half an hour drive of my door! We decided on the spur of the moment to go to the club, and all I can say is awesome. The staff were great, friendly and attentive in a way that didn't feel like you were being intruded upon. The food was excellent - cannot recommend the chefs pie and champ potato enough. And if you have enough room. Crumble was divine. The Vince Dunn band were amazing - George Kelly was a guest vocalist and his rendition of This Masquerade was amazing. Carl Hudson on piano - murderous talent. Level Neville on Bass (puts the C into Cool!). Aaron Liddard on Sax. Even having to kneel to help the best out of his flute. Didn't detract from his playing. Mr Defoe on Bass - awesome and last but not least. Sublime drums from Mr Dunn himself. I would recommend you run to Hideaway. Ignore the previous reviews from people who obviously don't know a good venue when it hits them in the face! And enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! I know I'll be back as a regular now, I'm even taking up membership, and as a member of Ronnie's and the 606 club I'm comparing it favourably. Go sample and make your own mind up. You won't be disappointed!

I read the reviews below before going to the Hideaway on Saturday and was a bit worried about all the negative comments...

But I honestly can say we had a fantastic time at the Hideaway. things that were great, in no particular order:

- the venue itself is spacious and stylish, really not what I expected to find in Streatham (I live here);
- the service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Waiters came back to us throughout the evening to check if we needed anything.
- Although we were a group of 15, we all received our meals at the same time and everyone liked the food. Unlike many places, we weren't required to pre-order either. And it was good value;
- the music was excellent, a really great blues singer and band. Not beard stroking jazz but music you can dance to (and people did). Yes you did need to be quieter when the (excellent) singer was on but you could talk quietly (it wasn't deathly silence) and there is a separate bar area which you can come and go to;
- it was full of a friendly crowd of people and was a great atmosphere. It felt like a grown up night out rather than just getting wasted in a bar.
Really hope it stays open!

Unfortunately I couldn't give this place zero stars. It's a decent enough place - food + drinks are reasonable enough but it's let down by the the abysmal service but even that is out done by the low-class behaviour of the management. Which is clearly a trend as evidenced by others who have posted about this place.

1) out of seven of us one got their main dish 40 mins after the other 6.
2) we had to repeatedly ask for the used glasses and plates to be removed from the table - multiple times.
3) when we asked for a birthday cake that had been pre-ordered we were brought one slice of chocolate brownie.
4) when the cake was brought to the table it was like a rock!

All of that could have been redressed by the appropriate actions by the management. Instead, after repeatedly asking to speak to the manager and having to deal with 2 other different staff - each time having to re-explain why we were complaining. We finally demanded to speak to the manager who after about 30 minutes saw fit to come over and talk to us. Despite an explanation as to why we were unhappy paying the full price for what was totally substandard service we got various explanations as to why we should - even at one point we had explained to us that the bill was 245 pounds because we'd ordered 2 bottles of champagne and various cocktails - as if we were complaining about the price. It's actually hard to describe the ridiculousness of the discussion that ensued.

Until there is a change in management I would advise anyone to give this place a wide berth.

If you are the owner of this restaurant nice food, nice decor, nice prices, nice music but I'd suggest you fire you manager and assistant manager immediately if you want to have a viable business. Unless of course the manager is the owner ... then good luck to you!

Just wanted to write a quick review for this new place in streatham. I wanted to check it out as i had received a leaflet through my door and decided to pop in after work on a Thursday to see what the place was like and to have a bit of laugh after work with the comedy. Was a really classy place and I felt that from the moment I walked in. The food there was really good too and very well priced. What a great little find for me! I'm glad I didn't just throw the flyer away with all the others as I will definitely be back there!

What a fantastic Venue to go and relax with some friends. I came down with a couple of my friends after hearing about a new jazz venue in Streatham and I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is very laid back and the staff are so friendly. We ordered some food when we were there and that was also fantastic and not over priced like some places. The puddings were superb and might i recommend the Brownie Mm-mm delicious! Will definitely be going back there as it was a great night out and very classy!

What a shame! The venue is ever so classy but the proprietor lets it down with her lack of manners, customer care and dignity! I witnessed an incredible outburst (a hissy fit more like it) when she aggressively challenged a punter to be quiet. Surely if you prefer your clientele to be quiet during the live band performance there are better ways to communicate this without physically putting yourself in another's face! Other clients tried to diffuse the situation but unfortunately because they did not agree with her outburst she then proceeded to throw them out too.

A childish outburst which beggars belief. How can one return to such a venue and feel totally comfortable and relaxed knowing that if you so much as say something at the wrong time you are potentially in line for an embarrassing show down. Not for me! I'd rather go somewhere else. Even if I have to travel to the other side of London.

A couple of you had been before and been quite noisy so, at the beginning of the evening, I asked your party to remember to be aware that when the music started we would like you to be quiet or go into the bar area. We even sat you right at the back.
During the performance the front of house staff had to politely ask you, 4 or 5 times, to keep the noise down, and people at the front of the room had begun turning round to register their displeasure at your level of noise.
Nobody was thrown out.
When the performance was over, and as you were leaving, you complained about being told to be quiet and said you were never coming back.
None of you had paid to come in because I was doing someone a favour but the people who you were disturbing had paid.
The balance between controlling noise and upsetting people in a venue such as ours is a fine one to maintain. Luckily, most people appreciate this.

Hey! Great to hear of a venue where the management steps in to shut up the rabble so we can enjoy the music. Respect! Not been yet but the Hideaway is now on my list for a night out very soon.

I have to say, I was surprised to see a couple of bad reviews about Hideaway. Myself and quite a few friends went down on a Saturday night for my birthday and I have to say, it was one of the best nights out in this area for a long time. The music and the food were great ...and even the management! We were able to chat till our heart's content, but we certainly wouldn't want to chat loudly anyway out of respect for the muscians. It's the same at Ronnie's, they ask you to be quiet out of respect for the musicians, so what's the difference. Get a grip I say, I'm so glad we have such a great venue on our doorstep ...five stars!

Being a great lover of jazz music, I was really looking forward to my night out at the Hideaway in Streatham with my mates who also love jazz. The music was good and so was the food, but their was this cold unwelcoming feeling to the place and I felt very uncomfortable there, but only realised after witnessing the shocking behaviour of the manager shouting at customers merely because they were talking with one another. I have never in all my days of visiting music venues all over the world, witnessed this kind of behaviour from anyone!! Apparently if you want to speak you have to go an sit behind a glass window by the bar, but even the few people behind the glass were getting a good ol' telling off for laughing. Someone told me that a mouse ran under my foot where I was sitting, so I thought I'd call it a day and leave, never to return. Great shame as the area could so do with a great music venue, but this has been greatly spoilt by terrible management. If there's anyone out there that like to be punished, then maybe this is the place for you, but I'd rather go out to feel good at the end of the night!!

Same night, different member of the party.
The only shouting in the venue that night was coming from your table which is why front of house staff repeatedly asked you to keep the noise down and why other customers were complaining about you.

This Jazz Venue started out okay, as it had a little crowd, but the music was good. The Management was the problem. As me and my quest were sitting down for some nice food and music, I was letting my friends know that the place was wonderful for events; and then from out of no where; the manager threw us out as well as another table. I ask the reason; and she said for talking during the jazz session. I didn't know I was back in grade school. I would not go back to this venue you ever as there are other venues that allow you to listen to the sweet sounds of jazz and converse about the music and the venue. I suggest this jazz venue get rid of the management/owner or close it's doors. Jazz Cafe here I come.....

Everytime I have been to this Jazz Club I have had a fantastic time and am always telling people I know to go there. However I have seen the Manager abruptly ask people to leave before who did not seem to be creating a scene or ruining anybody else's experience, in fact her doing so seemed to create the scene. The music is quite loud in this venue anyway and it is difficult to speak and even when you do so I do not believe that anybody else around you could hear what you were saying, let alone the person you were addressing. I wouldn't let a rude member of staff stop me from going anywhere as the reason for visiting is for the acts, not the Manager.
