The ViewLondon Review
An underground venue that brings a touch of classic Soho to Shoreditch. The VenueHalfway between Old Street and Liverpool Street tubes, Home is underneath the venue’s cantina-style restaurant. It’s shockingly dark when you walk in during daylight but this underground lair immediately creates a soft, sexy impression.
Inside, details include scattered wooden mirrors and granny-chic lamps, and the dim light is complemented by low tables and chairs - best for chatting and flirting. In winter, this gives Home a chic, cosy edge. There are four divided sections, which mean a party or group gathering feels private and exclusive. The bar staff look really professional in uniform black.
The AtmosphereAt the beginning of the week Home has a hushed, intimate air about it, with friends gathered in corners. But as it builds up to the weekend this gradually changes to a stir of socialising, more like a private Soho bar than a Shoreditch dancefloor. Its the same rebellious party people but acting more polished in their location. Having said that, the weekend nights are places to be seen at the moment and girls and boys alike make an effort to dress up and bring some attitude.
The MusicIn general, DJs play typical East London electro, house, beats and trance. Fridays have just introduced a new broken beats night and the week peaks on Saturday when Home hosts Circuit, a popular party on the Shoreditch scene. The club stays open until 2am, occasionally re-opening in the early morning to a select few club nights. This is a treat, because rarely do you see an afterparty as plush as this one. Sundays are rocking with Headless - the dark interior is perfect for won’t accept the end of the weekend.
The FoodA tapas-style bar menu is the order of the day and expect good things with there being a full on restaurant upstairs. The plates and platters range from juicy fried chorizo or a bowl of olives at £2 to half dozen rock oysters with shallot vinaigrette for £9. The cheese board from Neals Yard Dairy is delicious with a bottle of wine.
The DrinkWith the Soho look comes a bar menu to match. The huge collection of spirits on offer mean it’s worth taking your time over the menu, which has eight different vodkas and nine bourbons available to sample. All drinks are served in double measures and start at around £5 with mixers. There is also draught beer and a real cocktail list, filled with proper 1950s martinis and five house cocktails. You will love the Home belini – apple liquor, fresh passion fruit and guava nectar topped with Prosecco.
The Last WordIt’s the little details of this bar that make it such a stylish location, Home is a gorgeous and grown-up drinking den.
