HV is a decent bar, quite trendy, good beers, ales, spirits and friendly staff. The problem it has is that its former incarnation, Smoke was an absolute cracker jack of a place, full of character, quirky decor and crazy staff who seemed to be having just as much fun serving as we were drinking. The place was always buzzing and you were always rewarded with a great time.

HV is what I would call a typically Clapham bar in that its slick but characterless and appeals to the young professional mass market which is what Clapham is. Tooting Bec is a bit different and the locals appear to be voting with their feet as the few times I have been to HV there have been very few others in there. The recent revival and refurbishment of The Wheatsheaf opposite will no doubt have impacted on HV as there, the character and feel is much more "honest" rather than the pretentiousness over the road.

I do believe that HV is a decent place but I think the new owners have missed a massive trick by not looking to maintain the spirit of Smoke and instead looking to bring a bit of Clapham into an area which is clearly a bit different.

Really cool bar. Great atmosphere, really cool music, and a solid drink selection...basically everything you need for a brilliant night out!
