The ViewLondon Review
Everyone knows Brick Lane for its Indian Restaurants and art scene, but why not try something a bit different in the Hookah Lounge with a taste of Morocco?
The Venue
This little piece of Brick Lane has been transformed into a loungey North African hang out spot, complete with low tables, wood carvings and exotic art. Little cushion-covered benches and big leather pouffes cluster round small tables, perfect for sinking into after a hard days shopping with a couple of mates, but be warned – large parties may find conditions cramped to say the least.
The Atmosphere
Everyone seems to be some kind of arty type, whether a student, an editor or just a full-time loafer. However, they’re nice enough not to make a huge point of it, meaning the Hookah Lounge is considerably more laid back and has less attitude than many other bars in the area. Nevertheless, were you to wander in wearing a suit you might feel as though you’ve stumbled across slightly foreign territory, but hey, if you don’t care, they won’t either.
The Food
The Hookah Lounge serves up rather gorgeous, dainty portions of Moroccan and North African staples such as hummus olives and stuffed vine leaves. Although prices aren’t that steep, as bar food goes the portions are relatively small, so it’s a better choice for drinks and nibbles or a light lunch rather than a full dinner unless you’re prepared to spend some cash.
The Drink
Bottles and teas dominate at the Hookah Lounge – there’s no beer on tap, and those little glass bottles add up quickly. The wine is nice although not cheaply priced. The real star here is the tea selection, which includes a gorgeous fresh mint tea and a vast choice of dry tea varieties including one with tiny rose petals, which is fragrant and delicious.
The Last Word
The Hookah Lounge is a perfect spot for a decadent evening in the heart of boho Brick Lane.
