The ViewLondon Review
The Hope and Anchor is a basic, no frills pub on the outskirts of Crouch End.
The Venue
The exterior of the Hope and Anchor does little to inspire. It looks like any other old pub on the street with a neutral colour scheme and simple gold signage, which is a shame since it’s located at the bottom of a nice period building. Being located on Tottenham Lane means there aren’t a lot of transport links if you’re planning a visit. Hornsey is the closest overground station and there are also a few buses from Kings Cross and Finsbury Park.
Inside, the pub is dark and feels rather run down. There’s nothing fresh or modern about it and it has an old man appeal. The patterned carpets do a good job of hiding spillages and the wallpaper is dull and forgettable. That said, there is a pool table to keep the locals entertained and a small, almost hidden beer garden out the back.
The Atmosphere
Apart from the particularly friendly owners, the atmosphere at the Hope and Anchor is a little flat. The clientele consists mainly of young couples, locals and the occasional passer by. The staff are extremely welcoming, however, and do make the experience of drinking here more appealing.
The Drink
The drink here is definitely well priced, although the house white is on the bitter side. That said, for £3 a glass it’s hard to complain. Pints come in at the £2.90 mark and they do a great pint of Guinness here. It’s worth swinging by if you fancy an inexpensive drink.
The Last Word
The Hope and Anchor is a bog standard staple on Tottenham Lane. That said, the staff more than make up for this with friendly banter. The cheap drinks make it worth a visit if you’re in the area and fancy a pint.
