The ViewLondon Review
A simple pub with all the required basics done well, the Hung Drawn and Quartered is popular for a swift pint and some pub grub, but is it anything special?
The Venue
An imposing brick red building catches your eye in a busy City intersection, with pretty window boxes that echo the traditional interior. Old fashioned and slightly tacky large paintings of monarchs and nobles loom over the punters, but a rope noose hangs over the bar, which makes a great tongue and cheek addition to the decor. There seems to be lots of space yet the seating is extremely limited, which at peak times means you’ll find yourself uncomfortably perching at the crowded, tiny bar.
The Atmosphere
The testosterone hits you as you venture inside, with City suits lining every corner. Yet a jovial atmosphere still comes through as it’s their local, so work mode is shrugged off at the door and all that’s left is guys looking to have a good time. Speedy, friendly bar service and laddish chat gives the pub a nice buzz, (or a deep throaty growl) but there are still a couple of corners to hide away in for a quiet drink as well.
The Food
Food is also available, with a large menu consisting of hearty burgers, meaty pies and satisfying puddings to keep you full, but also lighter salads and small sandwiches for those who want a quick bite.
The Drink
Hung Drawn and Quartered has a wide selection of beers on tap and bottles to keep the customers happy, and a focus of affordable wine adds a touch of class. Prices are reasonable, with £16 for the most expensive bottle of wine, and the usual spirits are only £2 max, but the bar lacks anything unique to offer.
The Last Word
Hung Drawn and Quartered isn’t bad for a drink and a good chat with work mates, but avoid if you’re searching for any character.
