The ViewLondon Review

Soren Jessens Kilo is a delightful French restaurant that is open for long hours, serving high-quality French cuisine with a price to match.

The Venue
Occupying the site formerly known as Noble Rot, Kilo is a private members club and brasserie owned by Soren Jessen, the man behind 1 Lombard Street and Graze in Maida Vale. The restaurant is, therefore, unsurprisingly styled with lots of windows and one side of the dining room dedicated to six vibrant Pop Art prints depicting chicly coloured flowers that enliven the space.

The Atmosphere
Kilo is a light, airy and formal dining environment, helped by the wall-to-wall windows of the restaurant that look out onto Maddox Street. The service is attentive, unobtrusive and, perhaps surprisingly, unpretentious, rendering Kilo a great everything-under-one-roof environment from which to while away an evening.

The Food
The food offering is French brasserie style – a cuisine gaining renewed popularity in London. Open from 10am Thursday to Saturday, diners can enjoy supper until as late as 2am – a great way to begin or end an evening. To follow the name, a range of dishes have been designed to order by the kilo – including langoustines, mussels, clams and the divine plateux de fruits de mer. The food is well cooked and the dishes classic, ranging from straightforward dishes like poached eggs with hollandaise sauce, frogs legs in parsley and garlic butter and entrecote steaks, to the more complex such as tagliatelle a la crème foie gras, perigordine truffles and paillard of salmon sorrel with vermouth sauce. All are comprised of the freshest ingredients, with great attention to detail in the cooking.

The Drink
The extensive wine list is well put together with the finest wines chosen to complement the food on offer. Prices can be high, but for a restaurant like this, it’s nice to treat yourself and splurge on a good bottle.

The Last Word
Kilo is a fine example of the phrase, “You get what you pay for.” Expect high quality food in a top-class venue.
