The ViewLondon Review
Kitts brings a classy flavour of the Caribbean to Chelsea, with the emphasis at this celebrity hangout placed firmly on decadence and glamour.
The Venue
Kitts is located in Sloane Square, just a few moments walk from Sloane Square tube station at the top of Kings Road. Named after the island in the West Indies that Sir Hans Sloane brought chocolate back from (St Kitts), the venue is accessed by a discreet blue Victorian door. Once inside, the island party spirit combines with contemporary design with cool, cubic lightbox tables, a curved bronze bar, discreet booths, and a disco light display that changes colour at various intervals. You can’t help feeling that more than one idea has been lifted from West End venues like Kabarets Prophecy, but it’s bright, fun, and sets the mood for a night out perfectly. More unique is the Poinciana flower motif featured around the club – it’s the national flower of St Kitts.
The Atmosphere
Attracting a young mix of Sloane Rangers and trustafarians hasn’t been enough for the three young public school boys that opened this venue – they’ve actively pursued trendy celebrities to up the cool stakes, including Noel Gallagher, who held his fortieth birthday here. There’s every reason for the glitterati to flock here – there’s a strictly enforced members only door policy, the bouncers are polite and friendly unless they detect trouble, and the party vibe inside abounds with a fairly small capacity of 180 helping keep everyone sociable and chatty on the dance floor. The bar staff are great too, whipping up individual cocktails and offering the unusual food menu (chips with caviar, anyone?) if you ask.
The Music
The music is a DJ-spun mix of funky house, commercial dance, chart and RnB tunes, though the regular accompaniment of a saxophonist playing along to the music is a welcome and interesting addition.
The Drink
With another nod to the Caribbean and Sir Hans Sloane’s cocoa yielding expeditions, Kitts serves up an unusual mix of cocktails with dominant tropical and chocolate flavours. A must-try is the chocolate and rum spiked Hans Sloane, priced at £10.
The Last Word
Kitts tries to stand out from other London private members clubs with its Caribbean lilt, but it’s really just the same top priced drinks and predictable music when you get over the novelty. It’s still a great night out though, with an up-for-it crowd and great decor.
