The ViewLondon Review
Hidden behind a somewhat unglamorous shopfront-style exterior on Old Compton Street is this funky, urban cocktail den. Without the polish and pretension of many of its Soho neighbours, Lab has it’s own unique, raw glamour. The VenueA central location and a relaxed, urban atmosphere ensure Lab is a popular nightspot for everyone. Although there are two bars and seating areas (upstairs and downstairs), this small venue can get very crowded and you’ll find yourself jostling for space on a Friday night. Seating is quite limited and table service, from the somewhat abrupt staff, can be quite slow, so propping yourself by the bar is a good option. Unless you're lucky enough to bag the one large banquetted seating area downstairs, seating for large groups can be awkward and the few cocktail-style tables are only big enough for groups of three or four.
Get there before 9pm on a Friday and Saturday night if you don’t want to endure a queue and the obligatory bag search by the vigorous, albeit friendly, bouncers. Mid-week nights are much quieter, giving you more peace to savor your drinks.
The AtmosphereThe casual, comfortable seating and dim lighting creates an easygoing and intimate atmosphere that makes up for the slightly shabby retro decor. It’s all surprisingly relaxed compared to what you would normally expect from a busy Soho cocktail spot. The mood is lively, the crowd trendy, and the bartenders a delight with some Tom Cruise style cocktail making maneouvres. As the night rolls on and the drinks flow, you can mingle with the friendly, raucous crowd upstairs or descend to join the sea of writhing bodies on the makeshift dancefloor.
The FoodA small selection of thai-style nibbles, courtesy of the restaurant next door, is available to order. Although tasty and reasonably priced for Soho, portions are small and won’t do the job if you are looking for a proper meal or to line the stomach for a big night out.
The DrinkDon’t get caught out ordering a simple spirit and mixer, the cocktails are the main attraction here. There’s an astonishingly extensive and creative menu, including a mix of unique creations along with inventive twists on old favourites. Unusual ingredients like beetroot, herbs and kafir lime leaves are just as at home in the cocktails here as fresh fruit purees, juices and good quality spirits, liqueurs and champagnes. The bartenders are clearly experienced, the drinks conceived with almost scientific skill and the results are delicious. With prices ranging from around £7 to £8 you’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal in Soho.
The Last WordThe cocktail menu and relaxed vibe more than compensate for any shortcomings in the service or decor department. Perfect for grabbing a couple of apres work drinks with a friend or for dancing the night away, martini in hand.
