The ViewLondon Review
Young’s weren’t happy with owning most of Richmond’s pubs already so they bought this and added it to their collection. And now Lass O Richmond Hill is possibly one of the jewels in their crown.
The Venue
The Lass O Richmond Hill is undeniably beautiful. The large white building cuts a very impressive figure on the street with its bold gold lettering, Victorian-style lamps and an outdoor drinking area at the front. They even have their own car park for just their customers – a rarity to say the least in the capital, even the outskirts. Inside is the very definition of cosy and you can imagine this to be the setting of a romantic Christmas movie. Exposed brick pillars intercept the heavy wooden bar at regular intervals and the floor is a mixture of large tiles and wood. Black and white beams cover the ceiling and the rabbit warren of inter-connecting areas is filled with comfortable tables and chairs and lounging sofas alongside open fireplaces. A separate dining area is a little more formal but still keeps that cosy effect going.
The Atmosphere
Lass O Richmond Hill really is a getting away from it all experience and you will barely be able to believe that you are actually still in London. It’s the kind of place that makes itself appealing whatever the season but really comes alive in the winter when the warm interior makes the dark gloom outside disappear. Although it’s a pub that does care about its real ale offering, it’s not your typical beardy beer-drinkers watering hole and you’re more likely to find Richmond locals with a certain upmarket swagger drinking and dining here.
The Food
The menu at Lass O Richmond Hill is at the more gastro end of Young Brewery’s usual offerings with a more expensive choice of dishes like Gressingham duck breast, pork belly, corn fed chicken and saddle of lamb while traditional favourites sound more fancy with choices like beer battered fresh coley fillet with hand-cut chips and minted mushy peas. The price point is higher for these dishes at £10-£15 compared to the £6-£10 price point of more standard Young’s pubs.
The Drink
Despite the fancy food menu, Lass O Richmond Hill is still very much a beer drinker’s pub and there is a good choice of Young’s bitter on draught – think Special, Ordinary and London Gold. They also add in regularly changing ales from their brewery like Winter Warmer and the charmingly named Waggle Dance. However, what does impress is their above-average selection of whiskies, with almost 30 malts, blends and bourbons to choose from.
The Last Word
This may be one of the newer pubs to be brought into the Young’s brand but it’s already one of the best. A savvy addition by the group.
