The ViewLondon Review
Laurie Arms is cozy, warm and serves a nice menu of Thai food.
The Venue
Laurie Arms has a DIY charm to it with two very different rooms. The bar area is older but lovingly restored – be sure to check out the wood and stained glass along the front part of the bar. There is a discrete flat screen TV high up on one wall. The other room is a bright and modern conservatory with plenty of tables for eating at, but there is also a pool table for impromptu matches.
The Atmosphere
The Laurie Arms is a reasonably quiet pub with a broad range of ages present. Younger people play pool while older guys chat and bullshit over pints. Staff are friendly and make you feel welcome - they greet all the regulars warmly and clearly they have a loyal following.
The Food
The kitchen at Laurie Arms produces lovely Thai food at very reasonable prices (under 5 quid for a Thai curry with rice). With lots of choice, it would take you quite a few visits to eat your way through the menu.
The Drink
Courage Best Bitter and Bombardier are the specialty brews; if that's not your taste, they have Kronenburg Blanc, Guinness and Fosters. A limited selection of wines and broad spectrum of spirits give you a range of choices. All are well priced so you can afford some food as well.
The Last Word
Laurie Arms does all the basics really well. It's missing that indescribable spirit which makes a great pub, but it ticks almost all the boxes.
