Le Gothique is set within one of London’s architectural glories – the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building (RVPB). And its quality of drink and food complements the splendour of its surroundings. Since opening in 1987, it has had the highest standards - as review after review has testified.

The Venue
Le Gothique may seem hard to find, but it’s an easy 15-minute-walk from the rail hub of Clapham Junction and the 77 and 219 buses stop outside.

Completed in 1859, the RVPB was described by Queen Victoria, when opening it, as “beautiful, roomy and airy”. This Grade II gothic stone masterpiece has an awe-inspiring panoply of arches, turrets, finials, gables and oriel windows. Originally an orphanage for the children of soldiers and sailors, it also served as a military hospital and then in World War II as a detention centre for captured servicemen. Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, spent some days in 1941 in rooms now housing Le Gothique. He had flown to London hoping to conclude a peace deal – not on an architectural appraisal visit, however!

Now the RVPB houses a mix of apartments and offices plus the prestigious drama school, the Academy of Live and Recording Arts (ALRA). Le Gothique occupies rooms that are fronted by a grassed courtyard. In summer this is made even more attractive by an abundance of hanging baskets. This gained it first prize in both 2009 and 2010 in the pubs section of the Wandsworth in Bloom competition. It has one main bar and an upstairs restaurant that takes 90 covers. Furnishing is comfortable with mellow brown finishes to conform to the gothic style.

The Atmosphere
The imposing setting doesn’t mean that the atmosphere in Le Gothique is pompous. The owner, Mark Justin, has dedicated his 24-years in charge to sponsoring a welcoming and unpretentious feel. It is, indeed, the habitual meeting place for ALRA staff and students who contribute to its cheerfully relaxed character.

This unfussy atmosphere pulls in many locals. These include celebrities such as Helen Mirren, Alistair McGowan, Timothy West, Prunella Scales and Mark Owen of Take That, all of who happily engage in chat and conversation.

The Food
Listed in every single Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) Good Pub Food Guide, Le Gothique was one of the pioneers of quality cuisine in a pub. They don’t use the term gastropub as the venue believes this devalues the conviviality of the venue.

French chef, Jean-Marie Martin, has been ever-present for all of the 24 years of operation. He hasn’t left because he gets constant customer approval. He oversees a varying menu that often features French regional fare from Breton or Provencal. This provides an interesting choice of six starters, six mains and six desserts. Yet the price is only £20 for two courses and £25 for three. Fine dining rarely comes any cheaper.

Also good value is the lunchtime/early evening menu which is available until 7.30pm. This includes omelettes, Cumberland sausage and mash and a superb gilt bream dish. In addition, there are daily specials at £5.95 - the Friday fishcake is deservedly popular.

The Drink
Le Gothique promoted real ale long before it became trendy. They have three on handpump - one is always a Shepherd Neame, Master Brew or Spitfire, and another is a Downton from Wiltshire. At £3.40 a pint they are excellent value in such a notable venue. Le Gothique is consistently listed in the CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and has Cask Marque accreditation.

The wine list is, as is to be expected, outstanding with a strong emphasis on French tipples. It includes a Puligny Montrachet, a Margaux and a Chateauneuf du Pape. Yet pricing is affordable - the house white Cotes de Gascogne and house red Chilean Merlot cost £15.50 a bottle and a 175ml glass is just £3.50.

The Last Word
Although Le Gothique may seem off the beaten track, it demands that you make an effort to visit. This is not only to marvel at its superlative setting but also to enjoy excellent food and drink.
