The ViewLondon Review
A fabulous party venue, Lo Profile is a striking club but it keeps the atmosphere pleasantly cool.
The Venue
Lo Profile is a basement club that just screams party. The long and spectacular entrance corridor prepares you for what awaits inside: a fabulous light system, which is reason enough to visit this venue. Imagine a matrix of lights shaped as circles and stars - trademarks of Gaydar, the main driving force behind the club - covering the walls and ceiling and changing colour following the music. It is impossible to resist, especially when the smoke generator adds a cool haze to the medium-size dancefloor.
A long bar and its smaller sibling are just as stylish and the two semi-private rooms are ideal for private parties. Seating areas are not lacking either, with a raised balcony made for people watching. Even the bathrooms are immaculate and fashionable.
The Atmosphere
Without being a radically different gay venue, Lo Profile is a fun club avoiding any in-your-face extravagance or sleaziness, the clients and friendly staff reflecting the ethos. Expect to meet a crowd of young, well-groomed men enjoying the music and relaxing, surrounded by a well nourished group of like-minded people. The real surprise is that nobody fits into the loud, partygoer gay stereotype: jeans, T shirts and trainers mix with casual shirts and dress pants, and if it was not for the fact that the club gets busy very late and is populated mostly by men, you could be in any fun, laidback club.
The Music
The nights here differ, but the general rule at Lo Profile during the week is to spin the usual cheesy-camp, happy dance, retro tunes associated with gay venues. During the weekend, however, you will be pleasantly surprised by solid DJs delivering pleasant electro-house, progressive, deeper house and some unexpected pop songs delectably remixed. The music infuses a cool atmosphere to the party, which is always good within well contained borders.
The Drink
The menu is not very long but you will not be left without a decent drink. Predictably the biggest sellers here are cocktails (£7.50) and shooters (£3.50 for 25 ml or £6.50 for 50 ml). Most are traditional mixes with a few interesting house concoctions baptised with names like Chilean Chico, Sweet Tip Mule, Jammy Donut, and the sweet Cock Sucking Cowboy - a Butterscotch and Baileys mix. Champers and wines are not absent either and, while the first are a bit too pricey (£55-£190) to be popular, the choice of reds and whites, available by glass or bottle, is decent. The selection of spirits is worth some attention (especially the extensive vodka section) and a few beers are the last additions meant to satisfy everyone’s tastes.
The Last Word
Lo Profile is an excellent club: this stunning venue delivers good music while cutting down on all what other gay venues are notorious for. Definitely a welcome addition to the gay scene.
