Review byMartin Burkitt28/08/2007
Lock 17 lies tucked away from the busy streets, amid the mesh of markets and eclectic shops in the heart of Camden.

The Venue
Lock 17 does attempt to catch your attention with an enormous sign above its main entrance, and its success is reflected in a bar that simply never seems quiet. Inside, the limited space available has been used to brilliant effect. The interior has two levels; downstairs a small bar allows for a larger seating area next to the outside terrace, and additional couches and tables occupy the gallery area that overlooks the bar.

The Atmosphere
The bar is typical of local Camden venues, with a mix of indie rock and hip hop played loud over the customers in the bar. Meanwhile, the gallery area is partially shielded from the music in the bar, making it a quieter area for relaxing into the large comfortable couches. The music is confined indoors, leaving the wooden terracing above the bar (ever more popular with the introduction of the smoking ban) in relative peace, with just the sounds of the water rushing through the lock below.

The Food
Sizeable, yet simple and sensible, the menu boasts a good mix of sandwiches, salads and classic pub grub, along with some less classic dishes such as the excellent Thai beef stir fry. These are priced very reasonably yet are still served in healthy portions and make Lock 17 an ideal place for winding down after a long-day – the pub is a particular favourite with the after-work crowds – or filling up before a night on the town.

The Drink
The bar is extremely well stocked with all of the standard wines, spirits and beers you would expect to find, along with facilities for tea and coffee. Drinks prices are also pretty reasonable for the area, with standard pints and spirit-and-mixers both costing under £3.00. It also boasts a variety of cocktails for less than £6.00 and shooters for less than £3.00 that prove very popular on the weekend.

The Last Word
Lock 17 is by no means unique, but it is a great example of getting the important things spot on. Great food, comfortable surroundings, and a good variety of drinks coupled with its superb location make Lock 17 a place not to pass by.
