The ViewLondon Review

“There are no strangers here, only friends that have not met yet”: Yeats wrote this verse when visiting Lord Hood. OK, that’s not really true but the pub is the embodiment of this motto.

The Venue
You are likely to miss this small pub, and it would be a pity because it’s a lot of fun. Packed as it is with a large dart area - often monopolised by ladies of all ages - a pool table, and traditional pub furniture, Lord Hood is quintessentially British and very welcoming. Wooden partitions serve as shelves for a collection of pottery, whilst candles on bottles provide some extra light.

A beer garden - quite large in comparison with the rather diminutive size of the pub - completes the picture.

The Atmosphere
The atmosphere is the real asset of Lord Hood. If possible, pay a visit on Tuesday when English Folk Music is played live - the violins, drums and accordions cheer everybody up! They also play jazz and blues on selected dates.

The only thing that may put you off is the crowd of regulars - strictly locals (although they’re friendly with new faces), the punters are all ‘well seasoned’! The average age is well above fifty - so if you’re younger and looking to chat up potential dates, Lord Hood is not recommended.

The Drink
The beer list is not exactly exciting at Lord Hood but there are a few surprises, namely Manns Brow Ale, Courage Light Ale, Holsten and Kaliber. You would expect the prices to be a bit lower given the fact that Greenwich is so ‘countryside’ – and yes, the prices are fair with bottles costing £2.80-£3 and draughts coming in at £2.50-£3.

Given the particular crowd of regulars, gin and whisky are just as popular as beer and, as a consequence, Lord Hood is well stocked on all kinds of spirits.

The Last Word
The atmosphere here can sweep you off your feet even early in the week but there are no guarantees: plan your visit for a live entertainment night and bring a couple of friends to make sure you get the best impression of the place.
