Nothing but good to say about this place. Just the other day, while stranded in London by the Bjork Ashcloud, I was able to get myself and 29 other Canadians fed and "lubricated" thanks to the staff at Lord John Russell. I stayed for four more hours and sampled the cask ales and the original Budweiser and left prepared for my trans-Atlantic flight. The kitchen staff stepped up and got 30 entrees out in a timely manner. The owner was extremely hospitable and Joe the bartender kept me entertained with stories of fist fights in Hackney and life growing up as an Londoner in Saudi Arabia. Of my twelve days in London my day spent at the Russell was my favourite. By the time I left I had a warm glow and I felt like the regulars had accepted me. I will be back in London and I may spend every night here. My only regret from my trip was not finding this pub sooner.

If you’re after a grotty little pub where you can chill out and get drunk this is the boozer for you – and I genuinely don’t mean that in a bad way.

Sometimes it’s nice to relax with you’re mates in a good old fashioned sawdust on the floor, piss on the walls kind of place.

This pub has no pretensions, mainly I presume because the landlord can’t be bothered to give it any.

But is worth a visit – just remember not to wear your best shoes.

Lord John Russell isn't bad, and is handily located if you work or study in the area. The selection of beers is good, and it is reputed to pull the best pint of Budwar in London There's a small amount of seating but the place doesn't seem to ever get too busy.


The clientele at Lord John Russell can be a bit mixed, and the outside seats don't offer a picturesque view. In short, Lord John Russell is somewhere for a couple of drinks if you're in the area, but not somewhere I'd necessarily go out of my way to spend the night.
