A JD Wetherspoons pub just off Trafalgar Square, Lord Moon of the Mall is a well-managed, handsome English pub.

The Venue
Lord Moon of the Mall is a large rectangular room that has been handsomely restored. The wood-panelling on the walls is stained a warm oak colour, with nice high ceilings and a central bar. It can accommodate quite a large crowd with plenty of seating space. In the back third it is a bit quieter with book-lined shelves along one side.

The Atmosphere
A Wetherspoons pub usually attracts a pretty mixed crowd, and Lord Moon of the Mall is no exception. The other common factor to the success of their pubs are their staff - glasses are collected, service is prompt, and everything runs with efficiency. Their managers must receive good training. There is nothing fancy about the pub but you can get a decent drink and not have to worry about sticking to the floor.

The Food
A Wetherspoons menu is pretty standard - a broad menu of affordable pub grub. It wouldn't win any culinary rosettes but you can easily fill up for under a tenner. Who can complain about that? For example, on Thursdays you can get a curry and a drink for just over £6.

The Drink
Extensive is the only word for their drink choices. They deserve recognition for their support of local breweries and artisanal ales, with a constant changing menu of several different ales. They also sponsor various ale festivals celebrating this most English of drinks. Wine is on draught as well, which keeps it fresh and at just the right temperature. Their regular prices are quite reasonable but on top of that are endless daily specials. They manage to offer both selection and value for money.

The Last Word
You can't really fault Lord Moon of the Mall for much, it serves the needs of the drinking classes with an eye on service and value. It is only slightly lacking in its chain pub feeling, but it’s hard to quibble with the formula.
