The ViewLondon Review
Just five minutes from Waterloo station and easily noticeable on a street full of dilapidated shop faces, the stylish Lounge 34 is a little treat for Lambeth. The VenueLounge 34 spent much of its recent history as the traditional Spanish Patriot, and the hangover from this can still be felt. It’s pretty clear on entering that it used to be an old boozer that’s been gutted and replaced with more modern fixtures. Unlike more uber-trendy, overly designed affairs, the venue has gone for a grittier, less refined, minimalist décor, keeping with its modern approach but with a nod to its past. The result is a well laid out, spacious bar that doesn’t feel contrived. Leather sofas and seating make for comfortable reclining, and plenty of floor space means it’s perfect for busier nights.
The AtmosphereAfter-work drinkers looking for a few quiet drinks in comfort will be well pleased, as will those looking for a slightly funkier vibe at the weekend. Thursday to Saturday sees it at its busiest, with DJs spinning a variety of RnB, soul and house. There’s a friendly feel to proceedings, from the informed staff right through to the predominantly professional clientele.
The FoodThe selection of food is not extensive but it is well thought out. If you’re drinking somewhere like this it’s doubtful you’d want to be sitting down with a big plate of food, so the menu of warm snacks seems well formulated. Chicken and veggie bites, platters for groups and curly fries are pretty much it, but it’s all well prepared and good value.
The DrinkThe drink selection is sound but it’s with its superbly mixed cocktails that Lounge 34 really comes into its own. With a menu that many West End bars would cast a jealous eye over, Lounge 34 boasts some concoctions of genuine class. Most notable of all is a Watermelon Martini so darn tasty that sampling it should be a rite of passage for any self-respecting bartender. Others came close to emulating this high standard, not least the potently delicious Berry Breeze. All are served with considerable ease and plenty of passion, and they won’t even get close to breaking the bank.
The Last WordA vibrant little venue that seems to know its customers well, Lounge 34 is a delightfully unpretentious place where one of London’s best cocktail menus is waiting to be discovered.
