The ViewLondon Review
Having benefitted from a recent refurbishment, Mabels Tavern has substance behind its newly-appointed style. Substance in the form of beer. And lots of it.
The Venue
Mabels Tavern has a pretty exterior that they’ve clearly put a lot of thought into. Flowers cover the walls and windows and a few neat little outdoor benches benefit from their flashes of colour. With canopies hanging low overhead, it doesn’t even matter if it, inevitably, rains. Inside, the pub is spread over a couple of different raised areas and there's a large bar with pretty white panelling that's weighed down by its many draught pumps. Lounge-like chairs and leather sofa seating add a cosy edge to the room and a bookcase heightens this feeling further – a real home-from-home with the kitsch flower print wallpaper adding a certain design-led edge. It’s spoiled somewhat by the several large screen TVs on the walls, but this is appreciated by fans when the big game is on.
The Atmosphere
Mabels Tavern fills up considerably when there’s a big footie or rugby game on but the different areas allow you to escape the throng. In the summer, the pub really comes into its own with its few outdoor tables filling up quickly – and pretty much staying that way until closing. The staff are friendly enough although they can seem distracted at times… Maybe it’s those TVs.
The Drink
As a Shepherd Neame pub, Mabels Tavern has the full spectrum of their own-brand pints on tap. Highlights include Kent's Best Bitter, Spitfire, Bishop’s Finger and Master Brew and – in keeping with the rest of the group – the prices are low, particularly for the area. That’s probably why almost everyone in here seems to have a pint in hand. That and the fact the wine menu is below par even for a pub like this - something they make no apologies for. A temple for the grain, indeed.
The Last Word
Mabels Tavern has clearly made an effort and benefitted from its refurbishment. The outdoor spot is particularly pretty given the lack of space and the beer selection is good and cheap. It’s a real example of a cheap pub done good.
