I went there for lunch today, and hoped the burger and chips (at just shy of £10!) was 'reassuringly expensive'. Regrettably, it was just expensive.
The staff seemed puzzled when I asked for the burger to be cooked medium-rare. I wasn't holding out much hope, but I was utterly shocked at what was placed in front of me.
Masquerading as food, was a lump of bovine-smelling charcoal, covered in liquid cheese (supposed to be smoked cheddar, sounded delicious but rolled around the mouth like plastic), in a toasted (and by that, I mean burnt) bun. Accompanied by some over-cooked chips (I could probably count how many were on my plate on 2 hands), and some leaves that were completely smothered in something, probably ceasar dressing, but it was difficult to tell.
I was beyond disappointed. I often forgive busy pubs/restaurants for a certain degree of sloppiness at peak times or when they are obviously under pressure, but it wasn't busy, and at 10 quid I would have expected something wonderful. As it was, I probably would have felt more satisfied if I'd gone to Burger King (which I hate, by the way).
It is always very telling when the waiting staff don't approach you during the meal to ask if you need anything, nor did they ask if we enjoyed the meal while clearing our plates. I guess they knew better than to ask.
As somewhere to have a relatively quiet drink, it's rather nice. Just don't bother eating there.
I've got a soft spot for the Mad Hatter. I'd definitely recommend this pub to anyone on the south side of the river looking to get away from it all. The Mad Hatter is part of the Fuller's 'Ale & Pie' group so food is served 'til 9ish. Nice range of Fullers' beers, well served - worth a visit.
