The ViewLondon Review
The Manor Arms is a quintessential British local – a dying breed.
The Venue
The location of the Manor Arms is of great benefit to the pub, tucked away as it is off Clapham High Street and its many tacky offerings. Instead, this is a locals’ pub – run by locals, for locals. And so, it is as simple as it is charming. A small outdoor area to the front offers benches, parasols and pretty flowers – a scene replicated out back where a larger beer garden resides. Inside, it’s pretty dark and pretty basic. The central bar is the centrepiece to the room, surrounded by a few wooden tables and chairs, a handful of large screen TVs and, well, that’s about that.
The Atmosphere
The owners of the Manor Arms are a much-liked couple who have befriended many of their regulars – a mix of young and old from all backgrounds with just one thing in common: a love of beer. And do keep an eye out for their two huge – and totally unflappable – dogs. Everyone is made to feel welcome here and after a couple of visits you’ll feel a part of the family.
The Drink
As well as a few bog standard lagers and an above-average selection of wine for a pub like this, it mainly comes down to the ale to keep those picky regulars coming back for more. Options include ales like Purbeck IPA, Harveys Sussex Best and New Forest Ale. Cider drinkers can also slurp a refreshing pint of Addlestones. They also host beer festivals and even make the occasional appearance at the local Venn Street market at the end of each month.
The Last Word
This is what pubs should be all about: good company, good beer, good times.
