I'm quite surprised to be honest to see these bad reviews, as i have been going to the Maple Leaf on a regular basis now for the last year or so, and never fail to have a good time. The pub is completely unpretencious, and the staff seemed friendly and efficient. My only issue is the layout of the bar, which just for some reason doesn't seem to work and makes the room feel very narrow, especially when its a busy saturday night! However, still a great place and I recommend the poutine!
Avoid like the plague!Last order bell and I get myself and my wife a drink, only to find the bouncer coming 10 minutes later to stand by the table telling us to finish the drink and leave as they are closing now. disappointed, we took our jackets and drinks to the bar to ask for plastic cups and leave, only that my wife tried to explain to the barman that they should not have sold us drinks if they want us to leave 10 minutes later, the reaction of the barman was to shout at my wife and snap the drink out of her hand spilling half of it on her, I told him he has no right to do that as she has paid for that drink so it belongs to her, only to feel the big hands of the aggressive bouncer on my shoulder shoving me out of the place, shouting and spitting all over my head!! and the barman taking my wife by the arm of the bar. I was pushed out of there like a criminal. In all my 35 years of travelling around the world, I have never been insulted as much. I do not get drunk, I am not rude to people and I am the most pacifist person in the world, but that cannot be said at all about many of the aggressive people working in that bar. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ELSEWHERE!
My friends and I have been going to this bar at least once a week every week for five years as it's near a sports hall near to where we train. It used to be brilliant!! This year however (2010) it has gone rapidly downhill. There used to be plenty of friendly staff behind the bar and the service was awesome. Now you're lucky to get one girl serving at any one time while the customers wait for an eternity to get a drink. The missing staff appear just before closing time to order everyone out or they can be seen but they're far more interested in bottling up and cleaning glasses than serving. The main objective is not happy customers but getting out early!! The draught used to be good but now always tastes of disinfectant. Sad to say after 5 years and probably in excess of 350 visits we've decided to find another local. The one star is because we can normally get a table.
Rude staff, and very rude manager to start with. Visited this pub on sat 28th to have a drink and dinner while being able to watch the football afterwards.
food - Menu small and not great choice, but still there was items i would order, i wish i had bothered.
Rib and chips ( said a full rack of ribs - well it was 7 ribs less than half a rack when i have had a rib and chicken combo other places)O and the ribs were not very hot, the chips were cold.
Not a great start. One of the rib dinners had hairs in it. And the 3rd meal Steak - ordered well done but was pink, do they listen NO.
Drink - The only Canadian beer ( in a canadian pub) was off the menu "Sorry we ran out will have more Monday" LOL.
Dessert - we ordered the Pancakes, forest fruits, ice cream with maple syrup. The Pancakes were Pancake(single), was COLD the fruit of forst was a couple of Blueberries, maple syrup was missing and the ice cream o that was the only bit that was correct.
Asked for a manager and he came over, we told him the pancake was cold etc and he said "well thats how we serve it sorry but nothing i can do about it, thats how it is!"
And then walked away while we were talking to him. The Most rude Manager ( if he was even a manager and not just another student from behind the bar) i have ever meet.
His skills and his pub that he runs should be out of business if it is run like this. Maybe they need to change the staff both manager and kitchen and it may be better.
In a credit crunch you would expect better service, afterall there is a lot of choice in London and I will not return to this pub again unless i knew the staff and food had improved 200%.
Basic's of it are: Food zero star Drink 2 out of 5 stars Staff Minus star Cleanliness 1 star Overall half a star.

After taking a couple of mates to this pub for a drink, I'm embarrased to admit I'm Canadian. Unfriendly welcome, rude staff, couldn't get us out the door fast enough. I've lived in London for 20 years and thought the 'bell ringing to punt you out at 23:20' was over, not at the Maple Leaf. The staff were stacking bar stools on tables at 22:45 in the evening. I overheard the staff chatting about how to get people out of the pub so they could shut. The bell was rung at 22:50 with several cries of 'drink up', the front doors were flung open and the cold air poored in, they had their result, emptied out in 10 minutes. It's obvious management don't care about the poor standard in this pub. Give this dump a miss. You'll avoid the very young stuffed black bear proudly displayed in a case in the middle of the pub, crap Canadian beer and the mock tavern feel of the place. For any person still brave enough to venture into the Maple Leaf, think again!!!!!!!
Went to this place after work for a friends leaving drinks and found the staff to be incredibly rude and unhelpful. The menu was nothing special, but we ordered food as we drinking. It did not turn up for over an hour. Eventually this was sorted out when we approached the waitress who took our order, but not before the arrogant manager tried to tell us that the kitchen was closed and all orders had been taken! And i won't even go into the telling off he gave the table behind us who had actually taken our food... Will not be back!!!
I quite like it here, but the bartenders are slow and don't notice who gets to the bar first. Chicken wings on Mondays are usually good though.
The Maple Leaf is the only Canadian bar I've ever been to so it didn't really have any expectations to meet. They've got heaps of Canadian beers available and Sky TV. The Maple Leaf is a great place to go to if you want to have a drink with some Canadians. The Canadian girls are pretty hot at this bar!
