I went to Marvel on a night out with work friends, and was horrified by the 12.5% surcharge on drinks. This was not pointed out before being served at the bar. I could understand if it was table service. But it wasnt. After nearly paying £19 quid for a cocktail (after being short changed) I pointed this out to the member of staff who didnt seem very apologeitic. I enquired about this surcharge and got told they dont get paid and their wages are the surcharge. (illegal surely?) What mug would work for a fiver a night! The place was really cool looking, wouldnt describe the staff as friendly. But its just disappointing that they rip their punters off, expesh when the cocktails are actually pretty good. (not the long island though) I have now decided that I will charge a surcharge in my job, just for doing my job. Gonna be rich. On a serious note, go somewhere else is Chelsea for a decent, reasonable non-rip off drinks!
Hmmmm …
I’ve actually been to Marvel on several occasions and never had an experience such as the one you describe.
I’ve been with my boyfriend, my girlfriends and my colleagues and I’ve been there on many different nights after late dinner / early after work, Tuesday nights, Saturday night and live music Sundays. I’ve had brilliant banter and great service from the staff and have never found anything other than a cocktail menu left on the table.
They have great dj’s that kept us there all night with an array of juicy cocktails, served to us by a waitress!
What I love about Marvel is that it’s so arty and unpretentious.
They play visually inspiring videos on the brick wall and the hanging art changes every now and again. The atmosphere is relaxed and cool.
I was there last Sunday and there now doing mulled wine – which I highly recommend.
It’s the perfect spot on Fulham road where it can either be too ‘pub’ or too ‘posh’
Hi there.
I went to Marvel Saturday 30-10-2010 and what a shocker!!
I am a local and have been going to this bar for the last couple of years and enjoying myself when going there.
This place used to have an identity of coolness, great vibe and service along with some good cocktails....All which has gone down the drain in this place I'm afraid.
We waited for ages at our table to be served(The table was full of empty glasses that we had to clear before sitting down) - only to decide to go to the bar to order our drinks as there was no waitress to be seen. Took me a looong time to get served by a moody bartender with the personality of a brick - no smiles and no talk. The bar was extremely messy and I left the bar with drinks and wet elbows as I planted them in a puddle of spilled drinks on the bar.
The drinks we ordered tasted bland and diluted. After finishing our drinks me and my friends decided to give the cocktails another go as it might get better with the second round. Once again
The only good thing was the DJ.
I urge people not to go this bar anymore as there is so many other great local bars in this lovely area. Places where the service and drinks finds itself on a much higher level.
Too bad as I really liked the place but me and my friends will never come back to Marvel.
Thomas!
Marvel should really be renamed as there nothing remotely Marvel (lous) about Marvel. The staff are unfriendly and rude. They rip you off with a surcharge of 12.5 % when ordering a drink - any drink be it a coke, beer or cocktail! I can understand a surcharge being added on when the waitress comes to your table but not when you go up to the bar, order there and all the bar staff has to do is turn around open a fridge and pour it in a glass! Don't they get paid? This surcharge is supposed to be discretionary, however, obviously it is not as they take away the discretionary option when they add it on with straight away. Be warned if you dare to ask for it you will get dirty looks from the staff and then the bar staff will be rude about you to each other. (it is written at the bottom of the drinks menu 12.5% opt (optional) surcharge). Watch out also when you pay by card at the bar, the staff already add on a surcharge then they hand over the machine and ask you to press Yes of No for gratuity! If you fall for this you end up paying twice into their greedy little hands. The dj plays a selection of music that personally wasn’t my cup of tea but that doesn’t matter, what does matter is that he was rude and uncompromising, anyone who dared to request a song got looked down his nose at like they were something he had stepped in! The people at the party (bday party) I was with that night were spending thousands of £'s in the bar that night and when the birthday girl doesn’t even like your music something is wrong. Note to dj's when no one dances to your music you are not doing your job properly!
