The ViewLondon Review
A Central London boozer retaining an authentic Irish crowd is an increasingly rare thing and McGlynn’s is one such place.
The Venue
Wrapped up in a picturesque Bloomsbury street, McGlynn's can't quite match the blooming flower shop opposite for superficial beauty. You will, however, notice it by its bright green facade and, once you enter, you will be completely underwhelmed. The
interior of the building lacks a defining character that a pub like this needs, instead it relies on clashing colours, decorative rifles and an array of ornamental gargoyles that peer down from their high shelf.
The red carpet is clean and unworn, and the venue is spacious, however this is it for appealing characteristics. There really isn’t much to look at but on a more positive note, its roomy interior means that you’ll never feel hemmed in by the masses and
seating is always available.
The Atmosphere
If you like daytime news on loop then you’ll be in your element at McGlynn’s. Apart from the noise of the TV, the atmosphere is flat with only a handful of characters spread about the place to interrupt the babbling newsreaders. The weathered Irish
old-timers keep the landlord company at the bar, and this is pretty much how the day comes to pass.
The Food
The separate restaurant serves intermittently throughout the day, its state of readiness defined by the level of its lights. The food is average at best. Pub grub, such as pies, fish and chips and chicken Kiev are priced around the £6.00 mark. There are also
burgers (£4.50), sandwiches (£2.50) and a daily roast.
The Drink
The ruddy old bar is brightened up by the colours of various spirit bottles on its shelves including the sweet sight of Dooley’s and that dangerous tipple Jaigermeister. Amongst the more typical sights are a range of beers that include Fosters,
Kronenbourg, Amstel, John Smith’s, Guinness, Deuchars and Courage Best. On average pints range from £2.70-£3.30.
The Last Word
Aside from its bright green facade, McGlynn's doesn’t leave a lasting impression, but this doesn’t deter the people who enjoy it everyday with their old friends.
